WHITNEY ENTRY ONETWO Totem and Smear First and Sec ond at Woodbine Victoria Stakes Feature of Program Dragon de Vcrtu Scores In Lion Heart Steeplechase TORONTO Out May 22 Totem H P Whitneys good juvenile son of Broomstick Indian Rose and Smear a stablemato of the winner raced to an important triumph when they finished first and second respec ¬ tively in the twentysixth running of the Victoria Stakes a race over live furlongs that carried a purse of 5000 added which was worth exactly 3940 while an additional 1000 went into the Whitney coffers when Smear took the second division of the purse from B OF Randolphs Sustain which led J P Whites Deedie for third thirdFour Four others starteVJ H G Bedwell with ¬ drew two Little interest was lost in the race which was the feature of Thursdays program of the Ontario Jockey Club Weath ¬ er and track conditions were of the best for the sport that was furnished and it was a good crowd that was on hand to witness the program the fifth of the spring meeting meetingIn In the Victoria Stakes a start was effected without much delay and from a good begin ¬ ning Sustain was first to show out of the stalls Smear was second which Bubbling Out got away before the others and this trio showed the way Sustain was holding a head margin over Smear in the first fur ¬ long while Bubbling Out was a like distance back of the pair and just clear of Totem which was beginning to find his stride Smear was successful in disposing of Sustain but she was holding on determinedly while Bub ¬ bling Out began dropping back as Totem was sent up on the outside by Workman Rob ¬ ertson had sent Smear into a two lengths lead as the final furlong was reached but he was looking for Totem and when the latter over ¬ took Sustain to gain second place and Rob ¬ ertson was sure he eased Smear up all during the final stages to permit Totem to come on to a length victory while a length and onequarter separated Smear from Sustain which in turn led Deedie by a length lengthCONSIDERED CONSIDERED CONTENDER CONTENDERSnow Snow White the one that was considered the most serious rival of the Whitney young ¬ sters was in fifth place at the turn into the stretch but quit before the finish Avas reached reachedThe The Whitney pair returned the second smallest price of the meeting but brought better results for second and third place due to accounting for the two prize divisions divisionsOf Of the nine juveniles of Canadian parent ¬ age that furnished the contention in the Mount Royal Plate that opened the sport for the afternoon Spherette from the Sea ¬ gram Stable coupled with Bold added her second triumph of the Canadian season to her credit when she easily accounted for the race after leading throughout She won by four lengths from J P Whites Roche dOr which up an overwhelming advantage and in the final stages he had the filly under restraint to easily withstand the fastfinishing Roche dOr which made a game stretch rush to overtake Gimme Girl in the last few yards yardsThe The Seagram pair were well backed and they were the shorest prived favorites of the meeting meetingThe The Lionheart Steeplechase the daily race through the field had but five starters and only three completed the entire course and the winner came from the stable of John Bosley when his colors were carried to a onelength victory by Dragon de Vertu which led Toreador II from the Flying Horse Farm home Thrills began early in this race when Vocalian one that earned brackets earlier in the meeting slipped and fell on the flat at the club house turn Fathallah lost the services of his rider G McCann at the tenth jump but was remounted to finish the course for third money Top Notch broke down when leading into the thirteenth jump and ran out of the course courseFATHALLAH FATHALLAH FALLS FALLSFathallah Fathallah was the one to set the pace and led the way until the approach into the back stretch for the last lap of the field but when he blundered at the tenth jump Top Notch secured command and Toreador II was leading Dragon de Vertu The latter was slowly making up ground and when Top Notch ran out of the course leaving Toreador II in command Dragon de Vertu readily caught the latter before the final jumps and in the remaining stages under a drive managed to withstand Toreador II which came again under several lashes of the whip Maiden riders were astride the ten con ¬ testants in the Whitby Plate over six fur ¬ longs and with the running the combination of Elizabeth Bolla racing for Mrs I E Holland and Leyland turned up the winning pair when they raced past the finish a length before J C Fletchers Wilhelmina while a like distance in back of the pair came the Ascot Stables Cockey Captain CaptainPostville Postville began fastest went out to show the way with Cockey Captain right at his heels Wilhelmina and Elizabeth Bolla were in advance of the others Cockey Captain moved into a short lead when Postville sur ¬ rendered on the far turn but at the same time Wilhelmina and Elizabeth Bolla joined in and the trio raced closely lapped into the stretch Elizabeth Bolla however was go ¬ ing the fastest and the final furlong found her in the lead and going along in smooth fashion and holding enough in reserve to meet Wilhelminas challenge which fell short by a length Propus the favored starter had much trouble during the race and this handicap and his weight and rider proved too much for him to overcome overcomeVoyage Voyage carried the silks of the W J Owens stable to a front running victory in the one mile and onesixteenth of the fifth event that saw eight in silks His score came as a popular triumph when he led home P B Codds Seabright with third going to Little Scout the standard bearer of the H C Hatch stable and the lukewarm choice for the event that was decided under claiming conditions A Robertson who is with the H P Whit ¬ ney stable was astride the Owens starter Outstepping his field to the first turn Voyage went along in the van of Seabright his near ¬ est pursuer for the first seven furlongs and when shaken up nearing the final furlong pole Voyage increased his lead of a length and onehalf to two and onehalf at the end Seabright was two lengths before Little Scout which easily led Star the one that led the remaining entrants entrantsThe The Whitney riders R Workman and A Robertson accounted for three of the first five events they having no mounts in the second and third races
