Before a record crowd of more thaii half a million the Aga Khans Blenheim an outsider today woa the 150th running of the great English Derby over Epsom Downs Iliad owned by Somersville Tatter sail finished second and the ruling favorite Diolite was third Two American entries The Scout II owned by William Woodward and A K Macombers Parthenon failed to show Also Rustum Pasha another from the Aga Khans stables which was rated second only to Diolite in the betting failed to place placeBlenheim Blenheim ridden by H Wagg one of Britains premier jockeys paid IS to 1 Iliad paid 25 to 1 and Diolite 11 to 4 Silver Flare finished fourth and Trews owned by Lord Astor fifth The time was 238 238Seventeen Seventeen starters a comparatively small field got away from the barrier at 3 04 p m 9 04 a m together Half way around the two favorites Diolite and Rustum Pasha were leading and when the field came into the stretch the stands shrieked with approval as it looked like Diolites race raceIn In a sudden spurt however Blenheim surged to the front followed closely by Iliad and Diolite for all his millions of dollars in backing was eclipsed at the finish finishThe The start was delayed exactly seven min ¬ utes chiefly because of Silver Flare The Scout II the favored American entry nar ¬ rowly escaped injury by the British thorough ¬ breds slashing hoofs but when Silver Flare finally was battle with a quarter of a mile to go Iliad Diolite and Blenheim each were in the van at various times It looked as if Diolite would win and back ¬ ers of the favorite were in a frenzy frenzyWith With another furlong to go Diolite began to tire Iliad on the outside wore him down but only to be challenged in turn by Blenheim which came fast In the last six ¬ teenth Blenheim drew away to win by one length Iliad beat Diolite by two lengths Silver Flare was fourth Trews fifth Seer sixth Noble Star seventh and Parthenon was last lastThe The race was cleanly run and won It proved that Rustom Pasha is an excellent miler and that Diolite can carry on but lit ¬ tle farther The Aga Khan was overjoyed with the result He had achieved his great ¬ est ambition although he had previously won two English classics when Diophon scored in the Two Thousand Guineas in 1924 and Salmon Trout was victor in the St Leger the same year He was smiling broadly as ha appeared on the course to lead in the winner and he shook hands with friends ana strangers When interviewed he said that he had nothing on which to com ¬ pare the merits of his two derby colts ex ¬ cept the result of the race He instructed his trainer not to run them together or tried with the same group of workmates while they were being prepared
