TANNERY IN LIMELIGHT Wins Trial Purse at Homewood in Easy Fashion Hace Indicates Prichard Colt Will WillBe Be Factor in American Derby DerbyRenewal Renewal Saturday HOMEWOOD 111 June 10 Hopes that Tannery Edward F Prichards son of Ballot may yet vindicate the judgment of his big Kentucky Derby following which installed him second choice to Gallant Fox were re ¬ vived at Washington Park this afternoon when the rangy son of Ballot easily defeated Ned O Prince Atheling Ladrone Plucky Play and Culloden in the Trial Purse Show Ing marked improvement over his Kentucky Derby race and initial effort at the Home wood track and running the one mile and seventy yards over a fast track in 1 43 Tannery von cantering six lengths in front of Ned O The race the final preliminary for candi ¬ dates for Saturdays twentysecond running of the 50000 added American Derby was the feature of an attractive program which was decided before one of the largest week ¬ day crowds of the meeting While desire to witness the Derby hopefuls in action swelled the attendance ideal weather also had some ¬ thing to do with the large crowd crowdTannery Tannery without the support of many who Lacked him in recent races surprised by the easy manner in which he defeated his op ¬ ponents Prince Atheling was installed an outstanding favorite and his undoing after a good performance which left the belief he is only a sprinter may result in his absence from Saturdays race raceSETS SETS EARLY PACE PACESent Sent into the lead immediately after the start the Marsch representative held sway for seveneighths but Willie Garner had Tannery under restraint as he followed clos ¬ est to the leader and it required nothing like a real effort for the winner to assume the lead This accomplished Garner again took a good hold on the Prichard racer and he was not endangered by the final rush of the sluggish beginning Ned O OIt It was only by a length that Ned O led the tiring Prince Atheling at the end and but for swerving to the outer part of the course the latter would have given the former more of an argument for second place placeWhen When passed by the winner Prince Athel ¬ ing was bearing to the outside and after Tannery raced past he continued to do so in even more pronounced fashion Ned O how ¬ ever finished fast and his speed in the final stages left little doubt that he will prove a factor over the American Derbys one and onequarter miles milesAnother Another disappointment was Plucky Play the North way Stable colt which made a trip for the Cleveland Derby from which he was withdrawn due to the muddy condition of the track He was unable to offer a serious challenge at any stage and was slightly more than three lengths back of Prince Atheling at the end where Ladrone led him by a neck to finish fourth fourthWICKER WICKER CONSISTENT CONSISTENTWicker Wicker a consistent winner in this section last summer signaled her entrance into real competition for the current season when she defeated Betty Ann Nifty and nine other plater threeyearold fillies in the threequar ¬ ters race which opened the sport sportGiven Given a good ride by R Morrison the wellbacked winner wore down Nifty the favorite after the latter led to the stretch and drawing away into a good lead was not endangered by Betty Ann after the latter also made her way past the tiring favorite Betty Ann benefited through saving ground almost throughout but came to the outside to pass Nifty and finished gamely under a strong ride by apprentice Lennie Nine others were included in the field with Netie Pebbles finishing closest to Nifty NiftyTrapstar Trapstar from the P M Walker stable and saddled by D C Harrison Jr provided one of the biggest upsets of the meeting when she easily accounted for the second race in which ten of the cheaper grade juvenile fillies opposed her over five and onehalf furlongs Neglected in the betting the winner returned 15954 for the usual 2 the odds setting a high mark for the meeting meetingSent Sent into the lead by Carl Meyer in the run to the turn Trapstar held the lead safe thereafter and drawing away in the stretch was six lengths in advance of Miss Joan at the end A half length back Donna Vivian which finished resolutely was third with Nadia following The others included the Continued on twentyfourth page TANNERY IN LIMELIGHT Continued from first page well backed Generola which after beginning poorly failed to reach contention contentionThe The third race over one mile for older maidens also furnished a surprise when A E Barretts Richard McDonnell lasted to outstay Vermiculite the favorite Leyland rushed the victor into a good lead after supplanting Royal Panoply in the pacemakers position entering the stretch but he tired badly in the final sixteenth and Vermiculite after losing much ground during the final three sixteenths just missed getting up Some eight lengths separated the latter and Mali ¬ cious which took third by a length from Stop Gap while Royal Panoply and Miss Alabama after showing early speed tired in the final stages Eddie Hay ward former jockey saddled the winner the first of his training career careerA A bit of crowding marked the Hyde Park Purse or fourth race for twoyearolds and Hyman the winner provided by the Ran ¬ cocas Stable was responsible for it When working his way up fast in the final eighth he impeded Aunt Deb which was destined to finish in third place and finding room along the rail through the elimination of Aunt Deb the winner used it to advantage in wearing down Portcodine to win by a half length At the end the unlucky Aunt Deb was six lengths back backFollowing Following the race the stewards had jockey R Ayraud who rode the winner and A Richard rider of Aunt Deb before them but after deliberation allowed the original result to stand and decided upon a suspension of ten days for Ayraud AyraudBobashela Bobashela and jockey II Schutte in the Audley Farm colors made up the winning combination in the Stevens Hotel Handicap also over one mile and seventy yards and run as the sixth race Bobashela led through ¬ out and maintaining a pace required to run the distance in 142 won by throe lengths as Martie Flynn nosed out Chicago for sec ¬ ond place The latter had a final margin of a neck over Canaan with Boom and Ben Machree completing the small but crack field Bobashela came in for confident sup port and his victory was a popular one
