FAST AND FURIOUS FINISH] * Marks Running of Greenfield Claiming Stakes, Tuesday Feature. ♦ Renaissance, Under Pascumas Strong Ride, Defeats Brandon Mint by a Head-Threatening and Cold Weather. • NEW YORK, N. Y., May 12.— A spirited finish resulted in the Greenfield Claiming Stakes, a five furlongs dash, for juveniles, which featured todays program at Jamaica, and victory fell to John J. Robinsons Renaissance by a head over the Brandon Stables Brandon Mint. Third place was taken by G. D. Wideners Impeach, which was a half length farther back. Under a strong ride from A. Pascuma, Renaissance wore down Brandon Mint in the stretch to get first honors. Impeach finished fastest of all after going to the outside at the final turn. The victory was worth ,800 to Robinson, and the winning son of Master Charlie and Humanitarian covered the distance in :594/s. The track was still damp from recent rains and was not at its best. Zekiel was a strong favorite for the Greenfield, but had little chance, suffering considerable interference soon after the start. Sky Alight outbroke the others, but was soon outrun by Brandon Mint, which sped along in front of the others until collared by the winner in the stretch. Renaissance went into second place at the far turn and was held there by Pascuma until the latter was ready to make his move. Meanwhile Impeach was having a rough journey on the inside, and finally Long took to the outside at the quarter pole, from where the Widener colt closed full of run. Fourth place was taken by Brandon Rose, stablemate of the second horse, and Zekiel was fifth. Sky Alight tired badly. ATTENDANCE SMALL. The crowd was again small, due to the hreat of rain and the chilliness of the weather. Finishing with a stout rush in the final quarter, C. V. Whitneys Avenger accounted for the Chatham Handicap, second on the program and a three-quarters sprint fashioned for fillies and mares. The daughter of Dis Done and Nemesis won by three parts of a length over the Rancocas Stables La-dana, which, in turn, led home R. L. Gerrys Straying. Risque finished fourth and Elegant completed the field. From a good start, Straying rushed to the front, with Risque second on the outside and Ladana third on the rail. Avenger brought up last, where Robertson was content to rate her for three-eighths. On the turn Ladana slipped by Straying on the inside to take command and looked all over the winner entering the stretch, but Avenger was moving smoothly on the outside and she steadily wore down the Rancocas Stables starter, which was conceding her eight pounds. Straying held on well to save third over Risque, which apparently was in need of the race. The time was 1:12%, which was good time considering the dullness of the track. A band of plater three-year-olds started in the first race of the day and Glidelia, racing for the Rancocas Stable, was an easy winner. She came from the rear of the pace under P. Reisers handling and at the finish had a wide advantage over Claremont, from the Dorwood Stable, while Fruit Juice, which races for J. O. ONeal, was third. The winner was kept close enough to the pace and, turning for home, moved into command on the outside. Claremont, after racing Greens into defeat, tired badly, while Fruit Juice began lumbering about in the early running, but closed ground slowly over tired horses at the end. REVERSAL OF FORMS. A sharp reversal of form took place in the fourth race, at a mile and a sixteenth, when J. L. ONeals Little Pan got to the finish a length in advance of Indian Witch, with Clearance third. Little Pan was beaten twenty-four lengths by Croyden in their last meeting. Croyden was fourth in this race. Indian Witch attempted to make a runaway, as W. Prior allowed her to make her own pace. She maintained a good lead for a mile and was not overtaken until in the final sixteenth, but came fast during the final quarter. Under better rating Indian Witch might have lasted. Clearance was gaining on the J. S. Elliott filly at the end, but failed by a neck. Clearance was a half length before Croyden. In the race for maiden juveniles, fifth on the card, the Audley Farm Stables Happy Play and T. M. Cassidys Big Blow staged a bumping match all through the stretch, with the result that Mrs. John Hertz Muffler slipped through next to the rail to beat the pair of them. It was the closest finish of the meeting, as the three colts came to the finish noses apart. Big Blow took an early lead, but was soon joined by Happy Play and the pair raced head and head for the remainder Of the race. Coming into the stretch Big Blow attempted to carry Happy Play out and the two colts collided repeatedly in the run home. As Kelsay let Big Blow out Stef-fen sent Muffler up next to the rail and the three staged a battle royal all during the last furlong, the Hertz colt getting the decision at the end, with Happy Play holding the other safe by the smallest of margins. Defier was fourth among the five starters, a length farther back. Trainer D. R. McDaniel stated that the unbeaten two-year-old Vander Pool would arrive from Maryland the latter part of the Week.
