TELLICO TRIUMPHANT • Qualifies for Bashford Manor Stakes to be Run Wednesday. » Easily Wins Twin Caves Purse — Ray Blades at Long Odds in Oakdale Purse. * LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 18.— Two-year-olds shared the limelight at Churchill Downs this afternoon, and their opportunity in the Twin Caves Purse, at five furlongs, had added importance, due to the presence among the twelve starters of several candidates for Wednesdays renewal of the ,000 added Bashford Manor Stakes. Tellico, Van Meter and Carruthers son of Chilhowee and eligible for the Bashford Manor, was returned winner, while Our Fancy finished second and Paris Bound was third. Such others as Beauty Bride, Disdat, Anthony Wayne, Delivered and Sunny World participated. Tellico proved nicely suited by the fast early pace cut out by Beauty Bride and the hard track, and when called upon after reaching the stretch, quickly assumed the lead and went on to win by one and one-half lengths. As the victor showed the way, Beauty Bride also gave way to Our Fancy and Paris Bound, the latter racing from a long way back with a nice turn of belated speed. Tellico was backed with confidence and his win. the second during the meeting, was popular with a large crowd, that included no few Derby visitors who remained over to witness the inauguration of the final week of the meeting. W. S. Dudley furnished the winner of the Oakdale Purse, the companion feature, when his Ray Blades surprised in defeating Nos-taw, Prince Atheling and four others over the six and a half furlongs. Ray Blades, brought from behind the pace, won easily as Nostaw, which swerved badly after looming up menacingly inside the stretch turn, outstayed the fast closing Prince Atheling by a neck. Lady Fingers was the one indulged with the pace making, and she gave up the lead after reaching the closing quarter, during which she retired rapidly. A weak ride and interference took from the chances of Betty Derr, one of two three-year-olds in the small field. A limit field of maiden juvenile fillies raced five-eighths in the first race and the winner turned up in Lady Batts, from the J. P. Jones stable. She took the lead after three-sixteenths and, showing good speed, held the position safe to win by two lengths as Princess Dorothy outstayed Spanish Flirt, the favorite, for second place. Princess Dorothy and Spanish Flirt were factors throughout, while Pearl Grace gained some ground in the stretch to lead the others at the end. A. A. Baronis colors were seen in their first victory at the meeting when Wee Drop, ridden by C. Corbett, accounted for the three-quarters race that was second on the program. She defeated eleven others from among the fillies and mares and had to race in her best form to beat Baggage Maid by a head. The latter held on with marked courage after the winner had gained a short advantage at the end of five-eighths and there was little to choose between the efforts of the two in the final furlong. Third honors fell to Sis Agnes.
