AMERICAN DERBY MAGNET Washington Park 0,000 Race May Attract Twenty Grand and Mate — Sweep All Certain. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 18.— Although no time was lost in shipping from Churchill Downs, Mrs. H. P. Whitneys great Twenty Grand, after he had smashed the record in accounting for the fifty-seventh annual Kentucky Derby Saturday, the son of St. Germans and Bonus may return West before the end of another month to contest for the 0,000 added American Derby at Washington Park on June 20. The Derby winner, accompanied by Surf Board and Anchors Aweigh, which also carried Mrs. Whitneys Greentree colors in the classic, left for Belmont Park and the same train carried C. V. Whitneys Equipoise, A. C. Bostwicks Mate and W. J. Salmons Ladder. Equipoise, forced out of the Derby by a quarter crack, showed but little soreness while being led to the railroad chute, and it is believed that the son of Pennant will fully recover within four weeks. He was to be unloaded at Jamaica. Mate, the Preakness winner, vanquished here Saturday, also is expected to invade Washington Park for the American Derby and the 0,000 Illinois track fixture is the next objective of Sweep All, the surprise horse of the Derby, in which he brought Charles T. Fishers Dixiana colors to the finish in second place. Trainer James Rowe, who entrained Saturday night for Saratoga, hoped to reach Belmont Park in time to supervise the unloading of the Derby victor and his companions. While Twenty Grands sparkling performance mirrored his trainers skill, the efforts of Surf Board and Anchors Aweigh contained much disappointment for Rowe, who did not attempt to explain them. Saturdays race did not develop any casualties, and those in charge of Spanish Play, Pittsburgher, Insco, Boys Howdy and Prince D Amour offered no excuses. Spanish Play, which accounted for fourth money in Saturdays race, is among the several three-year-olds going from here to Bain-bridge Park to contest the 2,000 added Ohio Derby at that track Saturday. He is scheduled for unloading tomorrow night and will share a car with Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Lightning Bolt, winner of the Florida Derby. H. C. Hatchs Boys Howdy and probably one or two others go to Bainbridge for the race. When Twenty Grand ran the Derby mile and one-quarter in 2:01%, it marked the fastest performance at that distance since Sarazen astonished In running it in 2:00% to win over Epinard at Latonia in the great international series seven years ago. His Derby success also marked the third in four years for winners of the rich and important Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, the annual fall fixture for two-year-olds on the Downs autumn program. Reigh Count and Clyde Van Dusen were the other Jockey Club Stakes winners to triumph in the Derby, and Desert Light, winner of the stakes in 1929, did not get to the Derby post last May. The Derby throng thinned out rapidly Saturday night and yesterday, but scores remained over for more of the Churchill Downs sport, and visitors swelled todays patronage far above average proportions.
