WOTAN IS EASY WINNER Captures Jeffersons New Years Handicap by Three Lengths. Nyack Is Second and Gaillardia Third in Race Run in 1 :47 La Compere Victorious. NEW ORLEANS, La., Jan. 1. Wotan, who needs no introduction to racing enthusiasts, added the New Years Handicap, worth ,300, to his imposing record, as a throng of 12,000 witnessed the first running of that former Fair Grounds feature, over a good track and under pleasant weather at Jefferson Park this afternoon. Wotan, winner of the Thanksgiving and Green Wave Handicaps, earlier features at that local course this winter, brought the white and green colors of Edward Haugh-ton home three lengths in front of Frank Serembas Nyack in todays important engagement. R. C. Thatchers Gaillardia finished third, two lengths farther back and a neck in front of Prose and Poetry, stable companion of the winner. Mine Sweeper, Prince Atheling, Tannery, Light Mint and Prince Farthing also participated in the contest over a mile and one-sixteenth. RILEYS CONFIDENT RIDE. Under an extremely confident ride by H. -R. Riley, the winner trailed the early leaders and, coming through stoutly under his top import of 116 pounds, rushed through the field and to his decisive and popular triumph during the closing quarter mile. He headed Nyack, which gained the lead just inside the stretch turn, after entering the concluding eighth and came away swiftly thereafter. Gaillardia, which was in- dulged with the early pace-making and led to the stretch, where he readily gave way to Nyack, was giving ground rapidly as he reached the end of the route with little to spare over the fast closing Prose and Poetry. Mine Sweeper, which, like Tannery, raced in near attendance of Gaillardias pace, weakened in the run home where Tannerys faltering was even more pronounced. Light Mint, Prince Atheling and Prince Farthing failed to provide noteworthy contention. Wotan ran the distance in 1:47, a fine performance considering the track. With stronger opposition, he might have turned in a faster effort. It was his third success in four starts at the Shrewsbury track, the lone defeat being sustained in the Christmas Handicap, won by Light Mint. In the Christmas engagement, Wotan was" a victim of adverse racing luck and his victory today regained for him the handicap crown. LARGE ATTENDANCE. The patronage included the usual holiday outpouring of notables and the club house contingent was the largest of the winter. The attendance was exceeded only by the opening day throng of 17,000. Old Bill, a local favorite, carried the silks of Mrs. L. M. Holmes to victory in the Radio Guide Claiming Purse, one of the secondary features and sixth on the program. He made every post along the mile and one-sixteenth route a winning one with Volt Meter always in second place and Peace Lady outstaying the others for third. Herbert Krancer, publisher of the Radio Guide, presented J. Battista, who rode Old Bill, with a bouquet of American beauty roses. Delmonico, ridden by Melvin Lewis in the J. Keller colors, scored his second victory of the winter when he nosed out Adalor T. in the opening race, over a mile and one-sixteenth. Adalor T., racing in improved fashion, just failed to last after making all the pace and leading by a wide margin in the closing eighth. The winner stole up gradually and Lewis got him up right at the end. Third fell to Sistony, which trailed six lengths back, and Spanflow, favorite, was fourth. The latter lost much ground, particularly through the closing quarter, where he was taken to the extreme outside, while the leaders rushed down along the inner rail. Thomas Seth accounted for his first purse of the meeting when he proved best among the twelve older platers that raced in the second race at three-quarters. Purple Robe finished second an1 Florence Dolan third. A dull performance by My Inver, favorite, marked the sprint Away with the leaders, the winner raced nicely in hand for half the distance and, moving up fast thereafter, soon disposed of Purple Robe, the leader and came on to win Continued on twenty-third page.. Victim of a poor ride by Pat Remillard, Rivet, favorite for the third race, was unable to finish among the leaders, the race going to Edward Haughtons Lady Oldham, The Haughton filly led throughout and was an easy winner by four lengths over Piecemeal, which outlasted Prince Reno by a head. Both Piecemeal and Prince Rene were formidable factors at every stage. Going to the first turn Remillard took Rivet completely out of the running and she was far back thereafter. In the final quarter, where Remillard became energetic, the Labrot filly failed to rally under brisk pressure and her showing was one of the outstanding disappointments for the large crowd. Following his exhibition on Rivet, Remillard was taken off the same stables Open Hearth, a starter in the following race. Trainer W. Irvine made the change in which R. Tilden received the mount on Open Hearth. The Suburban Gardens Claiming Purse resulted in a big surprise when La Compere, a rank outsider, led home King Cherokee, Bud Charlton and four others. The winner sprinted into a long lead soon after the start and under the persistent urging of jockey R. G. Cooper held her advantage to the end, having a margin of two lengths at the finish of the three-quarters. King Cherokee, the favorite, raced to second place, a position he held throughout, and Bud Charlton followed in close attendance, being a neck back, while the latter outstayed Black Patricia by a head for third.
