SMALL FIELD FOR HANDICAP Half of Agua Caliente Handicap Eligibles Figured as Non-Starters Dr. Freeland Favorite. AGUA CALIENTE, Mexico, Jan. 14. Although forty-three horses were allotted weights in the Agua Caliente Handicap, to be run March 20, it, is possible at this time to figure half the number as non-starters, and the consensus of opinion at the border course seems to be that the smallest field in the history of the race will go to the post. Should Phar Lap, the Australian champion, ship well, and Dr. Freeland and Plucky Play stand training, the size of the band will not detract from the interest in the race, as that trio is capable of furnishing enough excitement for one afternoon. It is likely that Dr. Freeland will open favorite in the future book when the prices are posted about two weeks hence, while Phar Laps condition upon arrival will decide whether he or Plucky Play will be the second choice. At the present writing it appears as if the following may be classed as likely starters: Dr. Freeland, Plucky Play, Phar Lap, Reveille Boy, Alexander Pantages, Cabezo, Joe Flores, Lucky Tom, Marine, Seths Hope, Spanish Play, Up, Whipper Cracker, Whizz James, Wo tan and Bahamas.
