CABEZO WINS DERBY TRIAL Son of Carlaris Triumphs in First Start on Coast. Miss Ardath Schneider Accounts for Coro-nado Town Plate Astride Altavar Furnish Thrilling Race. AGUA CALIENTE, Mexico, Feb. 15. Cabezo, a son of Carlaris, western favorite of a few years back, bore the colors of W. T. "Fatty" Anderson to victory in the Derby Trial Stakes, which featured a good program at Agua Caliente Sunday afternoon. The winner went to the front soon after the start of the seven furlongs contest and led all the way. He was easily best, although his race did not greatly impress the spectators, his rider being forced to go to the whip in the stretch to make his victory secure. Sharp Thoughts, carrying top weight of 123, ran a game race to be second, and Joe Flores, racing coupled with the winner, was third. It was Cabezos first start below the border after a successful campaign on Metropolitan tracks. The winner carried 119 pounds, was ridden by Andy Fischer and paid .20. A field of seven eligibles for the Agua Caliente three-year-old stake faced the barrier in the Derby Trial, and starter Marshall Cassidy had some difficulty in getting a start. When they were straightened out Cabezo went to the front, replacing Sharp Thoughts, which had gone to the fore at the beginning. Cabezo led by a good margin down the back stretch, but Sharp Thoughts was running well and moved up slightly as they turned for home. At this stage Fischer resorted to the whip and Cabezo, responding, held his advantage. Joe Flores ran a good race and had he not had the winner, as running companion, might have given trouble. It was the first time that the green, red and white colors of Anderson had been seen below the border since Carlaris was the Tijuana sensation. The time for the race, which was run over a sloppy track, was 1:27. Despite the inclement weather, a good sized crowd made the trip to Agua Caliente, Continued on second page. Miss Ardath Schneider, popular little brunette equestrienne from Long Beach, won her third Coronado Town Plate when she rode Altavar to victory in that annual fixture yesterday. A field of nine went to the post, and Miss Schneider had her mount in front all the way to win by a nose in one of the most stirring finishes of the meeting. Miss Be DeFreest finished second on Sa-lona, the favorite, while .Miss Reba Perry rode Kingsman into third place. It was a thrilling race with most of the ladies riding with the skill of experienced jockeys. Miss Schneider sent Altavar to the front at once and her guidance of the animal was a revelation to the spectators. She withstood several challenges in the early stages by hand riding and when forced to resort to the use of the whip she wielded the lash like a veteran and kept her mount in front to the end. Miss DeFreest alsd rode well on Salona and that animal, finishing gamely, missed by a slight margin. Misai Schneider was given a rousing ovation as she returned to the judges stand at the conclusion of the contest and was congratulated by the judges and Miss Peggy Shannon, motion picture star, who decorated the winner. Altavar paid 0.80.
