TANFORAN PARK SPRING MEETING Thirty-Nine Days of Racing Arranged, Beginning Thursday, March 31 and Ending Saturday, May 14 SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Feb. 23. The spring meeting at Tanforan will begin Thursday, March 31, and conclude on Saturday, May 14. During the thirty-nine days of sport, it was announced today by the Pacific Coast Breeders Association, six stakes and other valuable features will be decided. The five stakes, run for the first time in the spring of last year, will be renewed, and to that list will be added the "Oakland Handicap." A" new method will be tried in the distribution of purse money for the overnight races. The i purses will be graded in proportion to the value of the horses engaged. The "big race" of the spring period is the Governor Rolph Handicap, the feature on Governors Dcy, probably Saturday, April 23. The distance of this race has been changed from six furlongs to one mile and an eighth. The features, including the six stakes, are as follows: Handicap, for three-year-olds and over, one mile and seventy yards, for ,000, Thursday, March 31. Handicap, three-year-olds and over, six furlongs, ,500, Saturday, April 2. . Tanforan Spring Special, three-year-olds and over, one and one sixteenth miles, ,500 added, Saturday, April 9. Derby Candidates Handicap, three-year-olds, one and one-eighth miles, ,000 added, Saturday, April 16. Governor Rolph Handicap, three-year-olds and over, one and one-eighth miles, ,000 added, Saturday, April 23. Bay Area Handicap, three-year-olds and over, one mile and seventy yards, ,000 added, Saturday, April 30. Oakland Handicap, three-year-olds and over, one and one-eighth miles, ,000 added, Saturday, May 7. Au Revoir Handicap, three-year-olds and over, one and one-sixteenth miles, ,000 added, Saturday, May 14. There will be a handicap with not less than ,000 on each of the three Wednesdays of the meeting. In distribution of purse money for the overnight races the method of grading horses has been adopted, the principle being to give prizes to platers entered to be claimed for ,600 or less, not less than fifty per cent of their value. For example, runners valued at ,600 will contest for purses of not less than 00; those valued at ,400 for purses of not less than 00; those valued at ,200 for purses of not less than 00, and thousand dollar horses for purses of not less than 00. In the event any horse is entered to be sold for less than ,000, the purse will be not less than 00. In the events for two-year-olds, if the claiming price is set by the racing secretary, the purse will be not less than 00; other juvenile events not less than 00. There will be seven or more races each day, and announcement will be made in due time as to the closing of the stakes.
