I STAKE WINNING JOCKEYS OF LAST YEAR :k There are so many small stakes decided on the tracks of the United States and Canada that scores of jockeys are given the chance of getting into the large column of stake-winning riders. This final installment of the jockey series deals with those that won features during 1931, which carried winner shares of less than four thousand dollars. Two steeplechase jockeys lead this list. J. McGovern was credited with ,650 for his victory in the Harbor Hill Steeplechase at Aqueduct, with Mrs. J. H. Whitneys Spar. J. Lambert was successful in the International Steeplechase Handicap at Belmont Park, riding the Log Cabin Studs Lauf-junge, which defeated Beelzebub, and among others LeBey, the favorite. This was worth ,500. B. Hanford can point with pride to his victory in the Mid-West Handicap at Hawthorne, if for no other reason than in the beaten field that day were such top-notchers as Sun Beau, Kincsen, Brown Wisdom and Jim Dandy. Uncommon Gold was the horse Hanford rode in this ,250 stake. H. Fisher rode the winner of a stake valued in excess of ,000 when he piloted Plumage in the Ashland Oaks at Lexington. H. Berry rode the winners of two small stakes at Agua Caliente, one known as the Mid-Summer Derby. This was won by Foolhardy, odds-on favorite. The other was the Independence Handicap and the two together grossed ,065 to the winners. L. Pichon had the mount on W. M. Jeffords Ironclad when the son of Man o War won the Jerome Handicap at Belmont Park. This was worth ,050. W. R. Coes Masked Ball led all the way to beat E. R. Bradleys Bathorse in the Mohawk Claiming Stakes at Saratoga, and this ,025 stake went to the credit of L. Knapp. W. Harvey rode the added starter, Sun Mission, over the line first in the Melrose Claiming Stakes at Empire City. The victory was worth ,810. The first running of-the Nursery Stakes at Miami, Fla., resulted in victory for Judge Primrose, with A. Snider up. This was a noteworthy performance for Judge Primrose not only defeated two or three youngsters that figured somewhat prominently later in the year, including at least one Kentucky Derby eligible, but he also set a track mark for the juveniles to shoot at. The winners share was ,790. P. McGinnis and F. Dainty figured in victories of some note on Canada tracks. McGinnis won the Kindergarten Stakes and the Kings Plate at Blue Bonnets. His mounts were J. Whytes Dark Victory and H. T. Macfarlanes Uvira. Dainty won the Maple Leaf Stakes at Woodbine, with D. Raymonds Step Off. Records of the winning jockeys in small stakes follow: W. HARVEY.
