SUN MEADOW PIMLICO WINNER • Hitt Racer Makes Auspicious 1932 Debut in Maryland. i Easily Defeats Happy Scot In Jennings Stakes — Microphone Outstays Proteus for Third Place. ♦ — BALTIMORE, Md., May 3.— Coming from behind and finishing with a good burst of speed, K. E. Hitts Sun Meadow, a four-year-old son of Sun Briar — Red Clover, got up in the last hundred yards to pass C. T. Graysons Happy Scot in the Jennings Handicap at Pimlico this afternoon, to win going away by a length and a quarter. Another length back came Microphone, and then followed Proteus. After the finish Mc-Auliffe worked Sun Meadow out an extra quarter. Just as he was pulling up, a dog ran across the track causing Sun Meadow to prop suddenly. McAuliffe was unseated and his mount stepped on his shoulder. Sun Meadow was finally caught and then the ambulance conveyed McAuliffe to the jockeys room, where he was assisted on the scales and weighed in. All this caused some delay and confusion to the backers of Sun Meadow. As to the race itself, Proteus and Microphone went to the front when the start came, with Happy Scot following the pair. On the far turn Happy Scot slipped through next to the rail, and at the furlong post had a lead of a length. Just when he appeared to have the race won he began to tire, and when Sun Meadow challenged gave up the struggle. Todays effort was Sun Meadows first of the season. This horse came out of winter quarters in grand condition, and he will likely prove a formidable horse to beat when properly placed. The six furlongs were run in 1:12, the fastest for the distance shown at the meeting. The net value of the stake was ,030. McAuliffe cancelled his mounts in the sixth and seventh races. A good crowd was on hand and interesting sport was in order. E. Grogans Grace Blotter furnished a surprise when she beat the odds-on favorite Star Fairy, in the Calvert Purse. This was a dash of four furlongs. Star Fairy, rated as one of the best in the Foxcatcher Farms lot, was heavily supported. Hanford got her away well and raced head and head With Grace Blotter into the home stretch. When put to a drive Star Fairy swerved over and hit Grace Blotter. The latter, recovering quickly, began to draw away and at the end she led the tiring Star Fairy by a scant length. Royal See was third beaten a length and a half for second place. Black Sheep tired when put to a drive. While at the post Priestess reared up and fell, Meade rolled out of trouble and escaped unharmed. Rigan McKinneys Inception, making his maiden effort through the field, showed a brilliant performance when he won the Monkton Steeplechase at Pimlico this afternoon. Ridden by W. Collins and rated off the pacemakers until the last turn of the field, Inception moved up in resolute fashion when called on in the final furlong and drew away to win by a length and a half. Citron, an imported fencer, was second and Totalis-ator third. Beelzebub, heavily supported, finished fourth. «
