Workman Monopolizes Saddle Honors for Day — Cantoria and Reveille Boy Among Winners. — — ! NEW YORK, N. Y., May 30.— White 1 Clover II., William Du Ponts imported son * of Simon Pure — Lovely Clovelly, added his name to the list of-turf immortals at Belmont Park today when he was winner of the famous old Suburban Handicap. It was by long odds the most notable achievement of the old gelding and added 2,250 to his earnings. Back of him came The Nut, from the Warm Stable, and Mrs. K. E. Hitts Sun Meadow, after having set all the pace, saved third from A. C. Bost-wicks Mate. The Suburban was the big event of a holiday card of seven races, that brought out the greatest crowd of the season j to beautiful Belmont Park. The result came . as a stunning surprise to many in the great throng, as Workman, who was riding his • third winner of the afternoon, charged past the leaders in the final furlong to win going away. EXCUSE FOR GALLANT KNIGHT. There was some excuse for Gallant . Knight, winner of the Dixie Handicap at j Pimlico, when one of the bandages on a , hind leg became loosened and it was trailing after him as he crossed the finish, being ■ pulled up last of the field. , There was little delay at the post, and i the start was a good one, with Sun Meadow . at once going out to set the pace while The Nut was in close attendance. Both were . under restraint as the first quarter was run in :23"5. Gallant Knight was in third . place with Blenheim alongside, and Mr. Bostwick had Mate under restraint on the outside and galloping strongly. Workman : at that time was another three lengths back with White Clover II. and permitting the outlander to gallop along in his own fashion. Rocky News, the stablernate of Gallant Knieht, was in the rear. | This order was maintained in the run | through the back stretch except that Mate : had moved up, but Sun Meadow was still , under a pull, as was The Nut, and they , were showing the way. Gallant Knight, as the turn out of the back stretch was reached, was dropping back, while White Clover II. was beginning to race wide in the move that was to land him the winner. Garner still had Sun Meadow in hand as he swung into the stretch. MATE FAILS TO RESPOND. There Mr. Bostwick called on Mate, but the son of Prince Pal did not respond and Workman had moved into third place. The i move had been made and a furlong out it was apparent that the imported gelding would at least be fighting it out at the end. The Nut was hanging on with such courage that Garner went to the whip on Sun Meadow, but the Sun Briar colt had given up his best and he faltered under the punishment. Mate was doing his level best back of him and then it was The Nut that showed in front. His lead did not last long, for Workman had timed his move to a nicety and running straight and true, White Clover II. swept past to be the winner by a length and a half. The Nut had saved second place from Sun Meadow by a like distance and then came Mate just another half length back. Blenheim was well lapped on the Bostwick colt and Rocky News had beaten his illustrious stablemate, Gallant Knight, the Audley Farm pair finishing last. Gallant Knight had been eased up by Schutte when hopelessly beaten. Then it was discovered that Gallant Knights bandage had become loosened and was trailing, while in addition to that handicap, he had bitten his tongue and was bleeding from the mouth. Continued on twenty-second page. V IMPORTED HORSE WINS Continued from first page. + i i Canron, under a powerful ride by "Sonny" ; Workman, was -winner of the opening seven furlongs dash. Boiling Water finished second and Unique saved third from Flag J Trick. There was a long delay at the post, for r which Boiling Water, Unique and Mabla were largely to blame. Boiling Water was j taken to a position outside the stalls and when the field was sent away it was to a i bad start, both Sheltered and Sea Going being - left at the post. Boiling Water was away in full stride and Mabla went after her closely, with Bird Nest showing the way to Unique, while Canron was well back of these and the others were in strung out order. Boiling Water was still a length to the good a furlong out, but the early pace was telling its tale. Then Unique put Bird Nest away, but in the meantime Canron was coming with a great rush on the outside. It was inside the final sixteenth she put Unique away and never faltering, ran down Boiling Water to 3 be over the line the winner by two and a i half lengths. The Bradley filly had beaten I Unique two lengths and then Flag Trick also outfinished Bird Nest to land in fourth i place. Frank Hayes good juvenile. Cantoria, came back with another good race in the ! third when in a driving finish he earned a i close decision over Joseph E. Wideners s White Lies. It completed a double for Workman, - who had the mount, but it was a lucky t score for the reason that White Lies had i been seriously interfered with by the winner during the race. Half a. dozen lengths I back of the first two Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Archer beat E. R. Bradleys Bobbing for third. Clarify began in front but was almost at t once headed by White Lies, and as the Widener filly raced along on the inner rail, Cantoria came over sharply to cut her off. Garner then was forced to change his course » and pulled out. He drove the filly up to Cantoria. and it was a battle to the final 1 stride, where Cantoria earned the decision i by a nose. No claim of foul was lodged by Garner after the running, though it was more than i expected he would lodge a complaint, and I the order of the finish was not disturbed I by the stewards. J. A. Bests Reveille Boy, which raced second to the mighty Phar Lap in the Agua Caliente Handicap, was a surprise winner of I the Memorial Day Handicap. It was generally agreed the seven furlongs was not far ~ enough for the son of Last Reveille to show r his best, but after being badly outrun to the stretch, he caught the fast ones to get home an easy winner. L. J. Marks Morsel 1 raced to second place and had plenty to spare over the Warm Stables Epithet, which, in turn, beat J. E. Wideners Mr. Sponge and l the only other starter was J. G. Langs Footmark. - Reveille Boy beat the others away from i the post, but he was at once outrun and it was Footmark that went out to show the way, closely attended by Mr. Sponge, Morsel i and Epithet. The four were racing closely r lapped and were soon five lengths before i Reveille Boy. Then it was Morsal that drew r away into a clear lead, while Epithet moved I into second place. Workman had not called I on Epithet, but as the stretch was neared l he roused the son of Epinard in an effort to send him up to Morsel. This was of no avail, but in the meantime - Reveille Boy had found his racing i legs and charging along on the outside he turned in a remarkable fast final quarter to smother the others with his speed and be past the line winner by two lengths. Morsel l had beaten Epithet by three lengths and Mr. Sponge quit badly to be another four lengths 5 back. 1
