LATONIA DERBY ON JULY 2 pate Set for Running of Outstanding : Race of Latonia Jockey Clubs Summer Meeting. LATONIA, Ky., May 30— The Golden Jubilee, or fiftieth Latonia Derby, will be run Saturday, July 2, or the second Saturday of the thirty-one day spring meeting starting at Latonia, June 25. This announcement was made yesterday by Col. Matt Winn, executive director of the Latonia Jockey Club. The Clipsetta Stakes, for two-year-old fillies, will be the opening day feature and the Independence Handicap will be run Monday, July 4. Dates for the Cincinnati Trophy, the Latonia Oaks, the Quickstep and Enquirer Handicaps, the four other Stakes of the seven stake program, will be set this week. For the past two years the Derby has been the opening day feature. With the change this year there will be two weeks intervening between the American and the Latonia Derbys. Although there is an extra ,000 to go to the winner of the Latonia classic in the : event the victor has the Kentucky Derby to his score, the Latonia management has not been called upon to pay that additional ,000 since this feature was introduced. ; Not since 1906, when the late George J. Longs Sir Huon won both the Kentucky " and Latonia Derbys has a three-year-old entered that select realm. Sir Huon had only Lady Navarre to beat in the Latonia race and it was she, fresh from her triumph in the last running of the Tennessee Derby, that finished second to Sir Huon at Churchill Downs. In recent years winners of the Kentucky Derby have experienced "tough sledding" in trying to annex the Latonia Derby. Clyde Van Dusen was the last to taste defeat in • - the Latonia race. After showing the way in the Downs classic, he succumbed to Buddy Basil. Behave Yourself was beaten by Brother Batch in 1921, while gallant old Ex- • terminator lost to Johren in 1918. George Smith found Dodge too much in 1916 and Worth trailed Free Lance and The Manager to the wire in 1912. Gallant Knight, Bagenbaggage, Chilhowee, Upset, Governor Gray and Joe Morris won the local race after finishing second in the . Kentucky Derby. ♦ —
