W. R. Cow- ies swift-running colt, Froth Blower, mak- ing his initial appearance of the season, came back to the races in good condition to account for the Danforth Purse, an allow- t ance affair that served as the prinical race . the inaugural program of the seven-day spring meeting of the Thorncliffe Breeders and Racing Association. In second place and beaten a length was Young Kitty, from the f Seagram Stable, while third was the part of j the spoils for Ryland H. News Aymond when he got a head decision over Star Crest of the Hastings Stable for that part of the " J prize. Four others, including Kingsway, a running mate of the winner, offered onten- c tion but cut little figure in the actual race. ° This was the fourth race and with Kings- J way as running mate, Froth Blower was installed the choice and the victory was one of the bright happenings of the day. Ridden * ; by F. Mann, Froth Blower was outrun for the first five furlongs and Kingsway was _ hardly able to follow close enough to force any serious opposition to Young Kitty, which , went out to show the way. Golader went along with the Seagram mare, but after a brief spurt was done, but Aymond, from the New stable, took up the burden and went along stride for stride with the ; , daughter of Old Koenig. These two were [ J , three lengths in advance of Froth Blower " reaching the home stretch, but the Cowie ■ colt was gradually making up ground. Young Kitty in an effort to hold her posi- tion, was punished, but Frother Blower was € not to be denied and in the final sixteenth 1 raced past to be victorious by a length and 1 £ Young Kitty was two lengths before Ay- | £ mond, which just saved third from Star A Crest, from the Hastings Stable. j With the Guelph Purse under claiming ! conditions and several other contests ar- • i Continued on twenty-second page. f THORNCLIFFE MEETING BEGINS Continued from first page. ranged, a crowd of large proportions turned out at the popular Leaside course for the continuation of racing. The many new improvements and innovations proved attractive and appealing, while the racing that was served made for a brilliant opening. Ideal conditions overhead and a fast track contributed to the attendance. Maiden fillies of the home-bred division furnished the contention for the four furlongs of the Debutante that began the sport for the day. This saw eight measuring strides, and victory was landed by Hidden City, one of a pair that performed for the Thorncliffe Stable. Acajou, bearing the silks of Donat Raymond, accounted for second, while Old Fashioned saved third for J. C. Fletcher when he took the measure of J. Cattarinichs Hollandaise and the four others. The second race brought out a limit field under claiming conditions over the five-furlong route. The result was a mild upset when Toy Town, racing for H. A. Coulson and ridden by L. Wells, registered a hard earned victory after leading for the entire trip to score by a nose. Skipsea, from the Pasadena Stable, always in closest attendance of the Coulson filly, had little trouble in saving second position, while William Garths Sinner raced in third position for the entire journey to earn that part of the spoils from Mrs. J. McGraws Joe Macaw. Eleven well matched sprinters displayed their mettle for the Hamilton Purse that was offered third, and this saw Fair Jack, from the H. G. Bedwell stable, continuing his winning ways when he led Pennate home in a furious drive to receive the verdict by a head, while S. W. Labrots Mexico was a length and one-half farther back to land that end of the purse from J. E. Smallmans Boscobel. Song Hit and Boscobel displayed a good brand of speed as they led the way into the home stretch, but Black Board found the pace too stiff and began to drop back. Fair Jack was offering stout opposition when urged, and Pennate, away slowly, moved up stoutly along with Mexico. Through the final drive Song Hit and Boscobel surrendered and then came a bitter duel with Fair Jack, proving the gamer, although Pennate appeared best and would surely have reversed the decision with a better beginning. The daily duet on the first and third races comprising Hidden City and Fair Jack paid 20.95. A spectacular finish marked the decision of the Guelph Purse, that served as companion piece to the feature, when three of the half dozen starters came to the end of the mile and one-sixteenth so closely aligned that the result was in doubt until the official placing was displayed. Frumper, from the R. H. New stable, which lost a close verdict to S. W. Labrots Tred Avon in the Toronto Cup Saturday, earned the decision and his score was largely attributed to the expert horsemanship of jockey J. O Mal-ley. Broadway Lights, an outsider in the small field, landed second and Rubio, from the Geneseo Stable, saved third. Happen was before Uluniu, while Louis Merryman showed a sparkling performance, despite finishing last, after being practically left.
