AMERICAN DERBY GALLOPS Economic and Other Candidates Seen in Action at Washington Park. More Eastern Candidates Expected Early Next Week — Colonel Winn Confident That Top Flight Will Be a Starter. ♦ HOMEWOOD, 111., June 10.— Three candidates for the 0,000 added American Derby, among the outstanding fixtures for three-year-olds, and coming up next for decision on Saturday at Washington Park, were in the limelight during the morning training at that local course today. They were J. H. Louchheims Economic, the stalwart Eastern threat; Big Beau, which will represent H. P. Headley, of Kentucky and Minton. one of several Chicago owned candidates and the property of P. A. and R. J. Nash, owners of Shandon Farm. Trainer Clarence Buxton had Economic, recent winner of the Ohio State Derby and second in the Kentucky Derby and Wood Memorial Stakes, work a handy seven-eighths and galloped out an additional furlong, while Duval Headley sent Big Beau a mile and a furlong and Minton, working under the direction of trainer J. J. Greely, went a like route. In his work the second of importance since his arrival Tuesday from Bainbridge Park, Economic covered seven-eighths in 1:28 and cantered out an additional furlong in 1:43%. During the first seven furlongs he was steadied along under snug restraint, running the quarter in :24, half-mile in :48% and the three-quarters in 1:14%. Although kept under a stout pull throughout. Big Beau put fair speed into his work, going three-quarters in 1:16; the mile in 1:44% and the mile and one-eighth in 1:58. Minton turned a mile in 1:45% and added another furlong in 1:59%. Mr. Headley has decided that barring mishap during preparation for the race, Big Beau will be under colors for the prized Derby. Mintons status is the same and as every one knows, Economic is not only a certain starter, but one of the most formidable candidates among the score comprising the probable field of starters. Burgoo King, Col. E. R. Bradleys winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, is scheduled for shipment West from New York Saturday and, according to advices from James Healy, trainer of Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Stepenfetchit, that son of The Porter will leave Belmont Park for Continued on twenty-fourth page. A number of the eastern candidates were carded for important distance gallops at New York tracks today and Saturday and, following the trials, will move westward for the local classic. Included in this group were On Post, Gusto, Faireno and Boatswain. While lacking, sensational qualities, the winning effort of C. V. Whitneys good filly Top Flight in the American Coaching Club Oaks was generally accepted as a meritorious and solid performance and Col. M. J. Winn and his associates in Washington Park today said that it would not surprise them if she tries for American Derby honors. Our Fancy, the J. B. Respess candidate, and eight of his stable companions arrived at Lincoln Fields this morning. Trainer C. H. Trotter immediately transferred Our to Washington Park.
