i 1 1 • ♦ HAWTHORNE PLANS DRIVE j FOR STAKE ENTRIES j * ■ * | From this time forward the Hawthorne | office will be a busy place. With the arrival in the city of general manager Joseph A. Murphy and with Joseph McLennan, racing secretary, available, the drive for stake entries for the events which close July 18 will be started at once. A conference was held between judge Murphy and McLennan and the racing program was gone over in detail. From letters received at the Hawthorne office, it is evident that the stakes will at- . tract the stars of both the East and West and as there will be no major racing in the West during August, and as every effort will be made to avoid conflict with the big events 1 at Saratoga, there is no doubt that Haw- 1 thorne will have the selection of the best i from both sections. j . 1 1 i j ] The order was placed for the Hawthorne I Gold Cup yesterday and it will rival in ,• beauty any of its predecessors. The aim of I the management has always been to secure i something distinctive and this year will i prove no exception to the rule. 1
