LITTLE AMERICA AGAIN 1 Mrs. V. M. Duncans Filly Wins Her Seventh Race of the Year. Is Well in Hand as She Leads Small Field to Finish Line Vishnu Beaten by Indian Runner. CICERO, 111., Aug. 23. Little America, the fast four-year-old filly that races in the white and blue colors of Mrs. M. V. Duncan, won her seventh race of the year when she easily defeated a small band of sprinters in the Maple Crest Purse, best race on the Hawthorne, card this afternoon. Ridden by jockey M. Calvert, who seemed perfectly at home on the fillys back, Little America was under restraint most of the way and, although winning by but one length, was in hand as she passed the wire. Bonny Maureen finished second, a nose in advance of Kensington, while Colonial Belle was fourth and Suniday last. Little America was heavily played and paid only .28. After Little America had sprinted to the front in the early stages, jockey Calvert, as usual, sat back to take the filly under restraint. Racing under a hard pull, she led by a length margin down the back stretch, with Bonny Maureen trying gamely to get to the front and Colonial Belle racing close up. Approaching the stretch turn the daughter of High Cloud continued to toy with her field and, with the others doing their very best, she raced to the finish with .Calvert glancing around and having the filly under wraps. The program offered at the Cicero course today was ordinary, but a good crowd was Jn attendance, and well-played horses accounted for the majority of the races. The track was fast and the weather clear. LOVELY HELLS IX FRONT. Apprentice W. Chidgey, one of the lightest riders on the grounds, piloted Lovely Hills to victory for owner Bert Baroni in the first Tace. The little lad steered his mount through a narrow opening on the inside in the stretch and the filly, getting to the front in the last sixteenth, was going away at the "end. Spot Pot, with Lewis aboard, finished second, while Palatine closed fast in third place. Flirting and Indian Mist made the ;pace, but weakened near the end. Chesney, owned by Otto Lehmann, of Arlington Park, broke into the win column when he won the second race, a maiden affair at one and one-sixteenth miles. Off well, the winner followed the pace of E. R. Bradleys Bengal Tiger closely in the early stages and, hooking up with the latter in the stretch, beat him by inches on the wire. Crimean Lad was third. Chesney had a good following and was ridden by jockey J. Renick. Apprentice W. Todd, who recently arrived from Thistle Down Park, scored his first victory of the meeting aboard Ray Pollards Guide Right in the third race. The lad saved the horse as much as possible in the early running and the animal, responding gamely in the stretch, wore down Trombone to win slowly drawing away. Trombone raced well and was an easy second, while. Ben Blair finished third. All three were well backed. The race was at one mile and a sixteenth. MEDIUM OF HEAVY PLUNGE. Indian Runner, making his first start in some time, was the medium of the greatest plunge of the meeting in the fourth race and won as he pleased. Come-back money and a large play at the track caused the Jiorse, which was quoted at long odds in the first reading, to be a near-favorite at post time, and those fortunate enough to follow the "smart money" received .50 for each invested. Indian Runner beat the ten sprinters away from the barrier and, although headed by Vishnu in the early stages, easily passed the latter again in the stretch and won by five lengths. Vishnu finished far in advance of Tryandagain, the third horse. Indian Runner was racing for the first time in the colors of D. A. "Wood, who claimed him at Arlington Park. He was ridden by jockey George Woolf. L. T. Whitehill claimed Easy out of the jlxth race at Hawthorne Tuesday for ,500.
