EQUIPOISE OUT OF HAWTHORNE GOLD CUP WHITNEYS STAR SICK 1 Attack of Colic Forces Interruption of Champions Training. Fairerio, Gusto and Mate to Represent East in Saturdays Big Race at Hawthorne. CICERO, 111., Aug. 23 Chicago turf followers will be denied another glimpse of the American champion Equipoise this season. Word was received from Saratoga today that the mighty son of Pennant had not been training satisfactorily of late and would not be shipped to Hawthorne to compete in Saturdays 5,000 added Hawthorne Gold Cup, for which he was an intended starter. Faireno, which arrived on Tuesday to fill his engagement in the Gold Cup, stood the trip from Saratoga in good style and will be given a light workout Wednesday. Trainer George Tappan states that the colt needed but very little preparation to run his best race on Saturday. Racing secretary Joseph McLennan, who came from Saratoga on the same train that carried Faireno, reported that Equipoise developed a touch of colic last Saturday and ran a high temperature. He worked a poor mile on Monday and trainer Hopkins decided not to send him West. McLennan stated that Gusto would leave Saratoga Wednesday in company with Mate. Harry TJnna, trainer of the Abe Bartel-stein horses, announced today that he would likely start both Polydorus and Sidney Grant in the Gold Cup. Sidney Grant, a distance runner of ability, has been given a lengthy rest and, according to stable advice, is in fine fettle once more. Plucky Play, conqueror of Equipoise at Arlington, is another certain starter in Saturdays race. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., Aug. 23. Equipoise suffered a touch of colic on Saturday and, while the ailment cleared up quickly, Hopkins did not care to take a chance on working the colt tomorrow, then shipping him and working him again Friday at Hawthorne. Instead, Equipoise will be given a rest during the remainder of the meeting ,here and will be made ready for The Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park. With Equipoise out of the Hawthorne Gold Cup the East will depend on the Belair Studs Faireno for victory in the 5,000 mile and a quarter event, at weight for age. Faireno worked here Saturday in smart fashion and departed for Chicago Monday and, according to advices received here by James Fitzsimmons from George Tappan, the Belmont winner arrived in good condition.
