VIClBtf CLEAR SKY IS Chalks Up Another in Judge Mac-farlan Purse in Canada. Troubanova Lands Second Place After Drive With Cabama Grimace Gets the Verdict Over Lacquer. WINDSOR, Ont., Aug. 31. Clear Sky captured first place in the Judge MacFarian Purse, which -attracted one of the best fields at the Devonshire track this afternoon. Troubanova made a strong bid, working her way up gradually and went to the front for a brief period. Clear Sky had more in reserve, however, and went on by just before the finish was reached. It was well for the two leaders that Cabama did not get a better start, for this one, after trailing for some time, moved up on I the outside and was going faster than any-I thing else at the end. Pomfret also closed gamely. The Sir Wilfrid Laurier Purse went to Clarry, which got up in the last few strides to defeat Sphere of Beauty, which engaged in a furious drive with Royal Beacon the early leader, which weakened just before the finish line. Chanson Belle, performing right back to her last winning race, proved best of the dozen cheap ones that vied for honors in the opening six furlongs test. She was first to show out of the pack, followed by Infinitive and Adilenos, and withstanding repeated bids from Infinitive, shook the latter off and kept under a vigorous hand ride all through the stretch, just lasted to hold Sudden safe. The latter moved up steadily in the last half-mile, came to the outside in the closing strides and was just a stride short of reversing the decision. Infinitive, after making his bid to stay with the winner, faltered and .barely held on long enough to gain third over Toronto. Adilenos, after racing well placed for the opening half mile, failed to respond to punishment and landed back in the ruck. Grimace, ridden by J. Guerra, accounted for the juvenile event of the afternoon. This was at five and one-half furlongs and attracted a field of ten under claiming conditions. Lacquer finished second and the show position went to Skipsea. Grimace was kept in the first flight all the way, fought it out courageously and after resisting Skipsea, had enough in reserve to hold Lacquer. The latter, unfortunate in getting caught in close quarters around the far turn, fought his way clear and closed willingly under punishment, but was unable to catch the winner. Skipsea, after making several efforts to keep pace with the winner, weakened slightly, but held the minor award safe from Fair Mole. Espinetta, after breaking f orwardly, was knocked back badly nearing the far turn and was unable to recover sufficiently to enter into serious contention. Red Ronald, racing for J. S. McDonald registered in convincing fashion in the three-quarters mile of the third, scoring handily over W.. F. Morrisseys Soli Gills, while J. E. Smallmans Abduction was third. Bon Pepper, after leaving the post slowly, was rushed up fast on the inside and had gone to the front before going the first quarter mile. Red Ronald was quite some distance away as was Soil Gills. Nearing the stretch the pacemaker started faltering from her early efforts, and then came a general closing up. Soli Gills saved ground around the last turn and showed in front briefly, but Red Ronald, running strong, soon raced into command and drew out without need of undue pressure. Soli Gills, though no match for the winner, had a wide advantage over Abduction. Little Gyp was the choice here, but after acting unruly at the post was through after racing the first half-mile. There came a close and thrilling finish in the Canadian-bred event of the afternoon, when Clarry, Sphere of Beauty and Royal Beacon finished in the order named, with three heads on the post. Royal Beacon raced into a long lead, while Sphere of Beauty moved into second place leaving the back stretch and Clarry was trailing his field. Straightening out for the run to the finish, Royal Beacon was well clear of Sphere of Beauty and Clarry was moving up strongly on the outside. Royal Beacon began faltering fast inside the last seventy yards and Sphere of Beauty was first to overhaul her, but Clarry was not far away and poked his snoot down in front in the concluding strides. Serfman and Fess, racing, coupled and in the silks of the Thorncliffe Stable, were well regarded, but failed to cut any figure in the running. Jack Whyte is shipping his string to Toronto at the conclusion of the Devonshire meeting.
