TARPON, given a hustling ride, was kept well up throughout and closed gamely, but was overmatched. BIRTHDAY GIFT had the most early speed, set a good pace to the stretch head, where he weakened when put to pressure. GUFFLE, fractious at the post, broke from the outside and failed to be a factor under punishment. KING HALMA and MARABOU were outrun.
