SATURDAYS RACE DERBY FACTOR Three of Last Five Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes Winners Triumphed in Following; Years Kentucky Derby Eastern Contingent Holds Strong Hand LATONIA, Ky., Oct. 26. The Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, rich and coveted fixture for two-year-olds, through which the true greatness and super-staying qualities of Twenty Grand, Equipoise, Reigh Count, Master Charlie and others first were revealed, will be renewed at Latonia Saturday with prize money of more than 8,000, if only eight start. This important event, which had its inception in 1920 and up until last year was run at Churchill Downs, Louisville, has great bearing upon the Kentucky Derby and its impor- itance in Derby calculations is probably best told by the fact that three of its last five winners came back as three-year-olds to gather in Derby laurels. They were Reigh Count, in 1927; Clyde Van Dusen, in 1928, and Twenty Grand, in 1930. The second running in 1921 was won by Startle, a filly, and she was the lone winner of her sex until Kakapo accounted for last years renewal, the first running here. Saturdays race will bring from the East some of the outstanding youngsters of the year, while the West will try with what is estimated as one of its weakest "hands" since the race was inaugurated. Mrs. Payne Whitney, owner of the great Twenty Grand, which, in defeating Equipoise in this race two years ago, ran the mile in 1:36, a world record for two-year-olds, will be represented by Dynastic. This good colt, son of Supremus and Chaco-let, both triumphant in important turf battles on the Latonia track, is backed by excellent racing credentials and approaches this next engagement in fine condition. C. V. Whitney, son of the late Harry Payne Whitney, who won the first Kentucky Jockey. Club Stakes with Tryster and two others with Enchantment 1922 and Valorous 1926, will try for his first victory with The Darb, and Sun Archer, candidate of Willis Sharpe Kilmer, adds great power to the invading forces. Technique, H. P. Headleys winner of the Breeders Futurity here two weeks ago, is returning for Saturdays race and repeating her last performance before Latonia patrons will make trouble aplenty for the colts and geldings after the prize. Doubtless, she is the best of the "westerners," unless Charley O., R. M. Eastmans full brother to Mike Hall, proves as good as stable attaches claim him to be. At that the son of Hourless and Clonakilty may be a star, for he was practically left at the post in the Breeders Futurity and in preparation for Saturdays race breezed a mile in a shade slower than 1:40, an exceptional move on the local track. George Collins Thistle Play and A. B. Gallaghers Glynson are the more accomplished of the other Kentucky candidates.
