Linus "Pony" McAtee, for years one of Americas foremost riders, has retired from the saddle. He plans to rest this winter, spending the season iiuFlorida golfing, as has been his custom. Next year he may apply for a trainers license. McAtees decision to hang up his tack was not prompted by difficulty in making weight. He has ridden this year at 106 pounds. He finds riding duties too exacting. His contract with the Marshall Field R. L. Gerry stable expires this year. During his long career as a jockey, McAtee has piloted the winners of the majority of Americas most important stakes. He won the Futurity three times, Mother Goose, 1924; High Strung, 1928, and Jamestown, 1930. He won the Kentucky Derby twice, on Whiskery, 1927, and Clyde Van Dusen, 1929. His first important stake victory was in the Preakness in 1916, when he had the mount on J. K. L. Ross Damrosch. He piloted Macaw in the dead heat with Nedana, Fator up, in the 1926 renewal of the Carter Handicap. Other slakes won by McAtee, some of them several times, included the Adirondack, Agua Caliente Derby, Alabama, Astoria, Babylon, Bayshore, Broadway, Brookdale, Champaigne, Champlain, Clover, Colorado, Continental, Demoiselle, Edgemere, Empire City Derby, Empire City Handicap, Fashion, Flash, Fleet Wing, Gazelle, Grab Bag, Grand Union, Great American, Harford, Havre de Grace Cup, Hudson, Huron, Inter-borough, Jerome, Juvenile, Keene Memorial, Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, Kentucky Oaks, Kings County, Laurel, Manhattan, Matron, Maturity, Metropolitan, Mount Kisco, Pierrepont, Pimlico Fall Serial, Pimlico Futurity, Pimlico Home Bred, Presidents Plate, Queens County, Rosedale, Sanford, Saratoga Cup, Saratoga Special, Schuylerville, Shevlin, Spring, Swift, Tomboy, Travers, Tremont, United States Hotel, Whitney, Withers and Yonkers.
