LATONIA CUP HISTORIC RACE Despite Change to Handicap This Year an Interesting Contest Should Result on Nov. 12. LATONIA, Ky., Nov. 1. Although changed to an overnight handicap this year, the Latonia Cup, which had its inception in 1884, still occupies a prominent place on the autumn program of the Latonia Jockey Club. This test of two miles and one-quarter is down for decision on the closing day of the meeting, Saturday, November 12. In was the negro jockey, Isaac Murphy, who won the first Latonia Cup with Harry Gilmore, and while Murphy experienced little trouble in winning the inaugural event, Tax Gatherer and Levant raced so closely aligned to the wire that the judges were unable to separate them and declared a dead heat for second. The Cup continued to hold its place on the program until after the 1887 running, when it was discarded, but it again found its place among the fixtures in 1910, when Cintreila beat the gallant Cherryola, C. F. Grainger and others. Since that time such notables of the turf as Star Charter, Ru-dolfo, Sir Catesby, Lady Errant, Star Jasmine, Pif Jr., Moscowa, Exterminator, Be Frank, H. E. Coleman, Radio, Chacolet, Altawood, Deeming, Percussion, Mike Hall, Ben Machree, Royal Julian and Culloden have won at the end of the trying journey. Pif Jr. and Mike Hall have two cups to their credit, and this years renewal may afford W. H. Whitehouses Royal Julian an opportunity of duplicating their feat. In addition to the Whitehouse standard bearer, others that are being prepared with the race in view are F. A. Wehles La Feria, Charles T. Fishers Cee Tee, Raoul Walshs Border Warrant, Howard Oots Tela, H. C. Hatchs Partisan, H. H. Temple, Jr.s Brass Monkey, C. V. Whitneys Habanero, E. Haughtons Easy; Brownell Combs Manta, and others. - - During the twenty-six runnings, thirteen three-year-olds have won the cup and from indications three-year-olds will play an important part in this years renewal.
