i COL WINN PLEASED j j WITH DERBY CROWD j I LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 6.— Col. Matt J. Winn, son of a Louisville pioneer and one of the few American thoroughbred lovers to see every Kentucky Derby since Aristides won in 1875, must have swelled with pride when he looked over the brilliant outpouring of racing devotees that crowded Churchill Downs race track this afternoon to see the fifty-ninth renewal of the stake. Colonel Winn, leading spirit in Churchill Downs and the American Turf Association, defied the so-called depression by insisting that this Derby, like all that have been run since he took charge of the racing at Churchill Downs, not be marred by a single iota by retrenchment in value or in the expense of staging it. Faced with most threatening weather, I Churchill Downs went right ahead under Colonel Winns orders, arrayed itself in its finery of floral art, and prepared to handle a much larger crowd than attended last year. Colonel Winn had faith in the Derby as an attraction and in the American people as Derby lovers, and as has been said, the man who has seen all Derbys undoubtedly experienced a feeling of great pride as he saw his confidence justified. Threatening weather could not dull the picture of a regular old time Derby crowd. The chilly winds might have caused many of the members of the gentler sex to forego the gala Derby costumes they had planned, but it did not daunt all of them, and those in spring attire helped make up the happy pi-ture. Colonel Winn expressed himself as being entirely pleased with the crowd. He attributed the increased attendance first to the fact that this years Derby promised-more in the form of a balanced field than many Derbys of past years, and second to the fact that business conditions probably are on the up grade.
