Hughie Gatens, who has managed the clubhouse and mutuels since the inaugural meeting at Hawthorne track and resigned some time ago, leaves Saturday for Cincinnati, having accepted a similar position at the Coney Island track under the management of William V. Dwyer. Hughie managed the betting ring at St. Johns Park when Dwyer first entered racing in Florida. Gatens is also one of the official family at Tropical Park. Apprentice Monte Parke, who suffered a jaw fracture when thrown from Beaver at Arlington Park several days ago, is out and around following a short confinement in a local hospital Parke hopes to resume riding in about two weeks. Under the direction of trainer E. L. Fitzgerald, the veteran Plucky Play, owned by N. W Church, had a useful work at Arlington Park Saturday when he went a mile on the main track in 1:42. He was nicely in hand throughout. Gallant Sir, another star in the same stable, breezed a half mile in :50. Erwin Weidkamp, supervisor of the pari-mutuels at Hawthorne, arrived Friday from Latonia and lost no time getting about the task of putting his department in order for the meeting. J. Fred Adams will race Rehoboth, Anni-messic, Briar Blue, Lazi Canter, Adamite and Landsman through the Hawthorne season. The K. E. Hitt stable which Tom Rodrock will campaign at Hawthorne includes Skim-along, Black Dawn, Dawnchild, Repeal, All Rowes, Her Gold, Dr. Jimmie, Nona and Porteuse. Big Brand, a candidate for the Hawthorne Handicap and Hawthorne Gold Cup, worked a mile handily in 1:42 over the Stickney course Saturday. He went the quarter in :24, half mile in :49, and three-quarters in 1:15.
