BUTLER HORSE VICTORIOUS Star Fire Defeats Clotho in Yonkers . Handicap at Empire. One of Largest Crowds of New York Meet- : ing Watches Bunning of Last Stake Offering. NEW YORK, N. Y., July 29 James Butler has not won many races at his own : meeting at the Hilltop course of the Empire : City Association, but his silks were triumphant in the last special of the season when Star Fire was winner of the Yonkers Handicap today He was opposed by G. V. Whitneys Clotho, but the son of St. Germans was considerer1 thD better one by the crowd and, instead of applause for Star Fire, there were only boor for Clotho and Robertson when they returned to the scales. The crowd was one of the largest of the season and that was not the only result that was not entirely to its liking. In the previous race, when another Whitney "starter, Collateral, with Robertson in the saddle, was the popular choice and was beaten by Pova there were also boos. There was no part of this demonstration that was due Robertson, for he made no mistakes in his riding of either colt. Each was beaten by a better horse. When the entries came out for the Yonkers there was a promise of a four-horse race, but Apprentice, the stablemate of Star Fire, and William Woodwards Pardee were both withdrawn and it was cut down to a match between Clotho and Star Fire for the mile and a sixteenth gallop. Robertson went out to show the way with Clotho, but he had the colt under steady restraint as he swung into the stretch leading the daughter of Vulcain. This order was maintained at an even pace until near the turn out of the back stretch. There Luther moved with Star Fire and she went to the Whitney colt. For a sixteenth of a mile they went together and then Star Fire gradually moved to the front. Robertson shook up Clotho in an" effort to hold the lead and when that was unavailing he went to the whip, but Clotho had met a better horse and Star Fire continued to draw away. In the stretch Robertson was driving furiously, but to no avail, and Star Fire was past the line winner by two lengths. This prize carried a net value of ,100 to the winner. Preston Burch, who has had considerable success through the meeting, furnished an upset in the Hilltop Purse, an overnight event for the two-year-olds, when he sent out T. H. Somervilles Pova. This was a dash of five and a half furlongs and the daughter of Marvex, the English sire, made a show of C. V. Whitneys Collateral with Slipper King finishing third, while Sgt. Byrne, the top weight and winner of the . Eastview Stakes, was last of the five that performed. This was the second start and the second victory for Pova and her score was so impressive that it is entirely possible she will race on to greater achievements. She never left the result of this dash in doubt and her pace was a marvelously fast one. Racing a first quarter in :22 seconds, she was two lengths clear and she held the same advantage when she reached the half in :46 and the five furlongs in :59 to finish the route in 1:06. There was a disqualification in the five ! and three-quarters furlongs fifth race when 1 Character, after finishing first, was denied I the purse for interfering with H. Teller " Archibalds Westy Junior in the stretch run. The decision awarded the race to Westy Junior and moved Jack Richardsons Condescend into second place, with Marshall Fields Irish Wake third. There was some delay in reaching this decision for, while The Jockey Club requires there shall be three stewards, there were only two, Walter S. Vosburgh and A. H. Morris, in the stand for the running of the race. It took them some little time to agree m on the ruling. Irish Wake cut out the pace, while Character and Volette were away slowly in a bad start. Character proved he was much the best of the company when he closed a big gap, but in the stretch, as he drew alongside Westy Junior, which had earlier put Irish Wake away, he went over slightly and Westy Junior was seen to throw his head in the air. The ruling convicted Character of fouling.
