1 HAWTHORNE TURF NOTES T 8 . $ J. Lowry, an apprentice, collapsed when in the paddock for the second race Monday, in which he was to have ridden Tommy Tickle, and L. Ruder substituted for him. It is believed the terrific heat caused Lowrys sudden illness. Out of respect for John M. Haskett, the flags at Hawthorne were at half-mast today. Mr. Haskett died suddenly Thursday and was buried Monday morning. He was a member of the Hawthorne board. In the absence of Webb Everett, who is working at the West Coast tracks, William Kozer is in charge of the jockeys quarters at Hawthorne. W. Metzger registered Mike Brown, Yargee, Thalo, Polyfon and Enro. Mosu F. Shapoff was an arrival from Rockingham Park and will remain through the Hawthorne season. Col. Hatfield, Muslet, Hamilton, Epin and Jesemola were unloaded by Johnny Par-malee. They shipped in good style from Rockingham Park. The A. B. Gallaher string, including Back Log, Glynson, Whirling, Oswego Princess, Pancoast, Swiftsport, Peggy Gal and Indian Red, reached here Sunday from Latonia in charge of H. Saladin. From the same Kentucky track, G. E. Lewis brought Betty Farrell, Sweet Talk, Miss Flip and Bichloride. The large stable Howard Wells brought irom Latonia comprises fourteen head, as follows: Catherine Fox, Elizabeth Fox, Dad Meiners, Mount Washington, Edith A., Hyd-sar, Masked Prince, Slash, Marcelle H., Lady of Grace, Prince Drake, Shaker Lady, Secret Tryst and Penncote. The latter, a juvenile filly, was taken over by Wells before leaving Latonia and is owned by Young Bros. His suspension for rough riding terminating with the close of the Arlington Park meeting, jockey A. Tipton resumed riding Monday. Jockeys J. Smith and S. Renick, among the arrivals from Latonia, lost "no time getting into colors and had several mounts Monday afternoon. Smith turned his book over to "Goldie" Mitchell, who also is looking after L. Ruders mounts, and "Whitey" Dauenhauer will make Renicks engagements. " George Swain has again been engaged to make E. Arcaros mounts. The horses of Mrs. John D. Hertz will next campaign at Saratoga, where they were shipped Monday morning. Trainer F. S. Hackett also got away for the New York track and he was accompanied by E. Stef-fen, the Hertz stable rider.
