VICTORY FOR W S KILMER Dark Winter Scores When Watch Him Stumbles at End Faireno Sets Pace but Tires in Crawford CrawfordHandicap Handicap at Jamaica Crawford Watches Race NEW YORK N Y May 2 Willis Sharpe Kilmers Dark Winter was winner of the ttest offering of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Jamaica today when in a game finish he won the Crawford Handicap over the mile and seventy yards distance The race was named in honor of Senator Craw ¬ ford coauthor with Assemblyman Ereiten bach of the new racing law Both of these lawmakers were in attendance as was Sen ¬ ator Dunnigan while Herbert Bayard Swope chairman of the new racing commis ¬ sion watched the running from the stew ¬ ards stand standWith With mild weather prevailing and an in ¬ teresting card prepared by secretary Kane a big crowd was out for the sport and it was of an excellent quality qualityIn In the feature handicap it was Mrs John Hertz Watch Him which finished a close second while William Woodwards Faireno showing improved form over his recent ef ¬ forts easily took third from Rose Cross which raced for the Manhasset Stable StableHenry Henry McDaniel was not on hand to sad ¬ dle Dark Winter for his victory but that was ably taken care of by his nephew D R Puddin McDaniel The blinkers were removed from the equipment of the Traumer colt His performance was one to suggest that he will not need blinkers in future racing racingFrom From a good start Faireno at once jumped into the lead and Stout sent him along into a lead of three lengths when the back stretch was reached He had the son of Chatterton under snug restraint as he galloped along and Watch Him also re ¬ strained was in second place well before Dark Winter Rose Cross and Mad Frump followed while Cleves was in the rear rearFaireno Faireno held his lead steadily until into the stretch but by that time Watch Him was drawing up on him slightly while Dark Winter was moving up next to the rail where Bellizzi found racing room for the Kilmer colt and he was rapidly coming into contention Stout was soon in a drive on Faireno but it was of no avail and Watch Him on the outside and Dark Winter on onthe the inside steadily drew up on him himThe The pacemaker was through a sixteenth from the finish and the others went past to fight it out Then just as his victory seemed certain Watch Him stumbled slight ¬ ly and Dark Winter running straight and true was winner by a head Faireno had quit so badly he was three lengths back of these but he was eight lengths before Rose Cross Mad Frump and Cleves had cut absolutely no figure in the running runningDamon Damon Runyons old plater Euclid was the second winner of the day to be sent to the post by Hirsch Jacobs He won the fifth a mile and a sixteenth that attracted a field of cheap platers Mrs R T Flip pens Field Goal raced to second place and Charles H Millers Pardee beat Major Gen ¬ eral for third
