PITCHBLENDE SHOWS SPEED R W R Cowies Kings Plate Can ¬ didate Thrills Work Watchers Trainer Giddings Appears Certain of Sad ¬ dling Winner With Cowie Star and Horometer in Charge TORONTO Ont May 15 The possibili ¬ ties of the good mare Chrysoberil sending out her third successive Kings Plate winner this year were given a boost Sunday morn ¬ ing when her son Pitchblende unbeaten in his only three starts last year had a sensa ¬ tional trial over the full distance of a mile and a furlong furlongThe The dockers could hardly believe their eyes when their watches showed 154 for this not only constituted the fastest Kings Plate trial on record in the history of the prize but also bettered the standard for the actual race 155 set by Queensway in 1932 Owner Cowit who won the coveted prize in 1931 with Froth Blower and in 1932 with Queensway son and daughter respectively of Chrysoberil was on hand to see Pitch ¬ blende work and he was all smiles when congratulated on the fine showing of his 1934 candidate Guess Ill go down town to ¬ morrow and order a new set of colors he remarked remarkedTrainer Trainer Giddings certainly seems to have no cause for worry now vHe has the out ¬ standing candidate R S McLaughlins Horometer in his charge and a stronger second string to his bow than many had suspected in Mr Cowies Pitchblende They will probably go to the post the shortest i priced entry for Kings Plate honors in many a year Mr Giddings had this to say after Pitch ¬ blende trotted back to the stable after his sensational trial It was a real workout Hell take some beating beatingDick Dick Townrow has been engaged to handle the speedy son of Sweepster in his big en ¬ gagement next Saturday SaturdayAnother Another comment of interest was made by the veteran clocker Tom Bird He said I have timed Kings Plate candidates in their preparations since Victorious won in 1891 This time made by the Cowie entry makes him a horse that has to be reckoned with The horse that beats him will know he has been in a horse race and that goes for Horometer too tooPitchblende Pitchblende started off by himself and after a preliminary gallop once around the oval was dropped down and went to work with a will as his first quarter in 24 will attest Continuing at about the same pace he was at the halfmile mark in 49 Mad Miss a fleet filly calculated to keep the son of Sweepster at his task picked him up at the head of the stretch and they raced head and head to give the 6000odd work watch ¬ ers lined along the front rail a real thrill thrillThe The Kings Plate candidate was caught at the end of six furlongs in 114 and the mile in 140 About this point Mad Miss had about enough of Pitchblendes speed and he took command to finish out a brilliant performance in 154 The Woodbine track is evidently in its fastest condition in many seasons but the work was a standout nevertheless neverthelessTwo Two other Kings Plate candidates to work were Speygold and Sam Worthy from the stable of W H Wright Beginning in front of the stand they galloped a mile in 144 an excellent trial as trainer Murt Maclver was certainly not out to break any training records with his charges they being well in hand all the way Speygold appears the better of these two twoSunday Sunday was a busy day in other respects at Woodbine Park for stables arrived almost continuously throughout the day and it now appears that there will be plenty of horses for the sport
