CAMBRIL EARNS PURSE Leist Youngster Graduates From Maiden Ranks at Louisville Morning Rain Affects Attendance Attendancebut but Weather Clears Before Post PostTime Time for First Race LOUISVILLE Ky May 15 Although rain fell during most of the morning and dark threatening clouds hung overhead about the time racing enthusiasts were de ¬ ciding their programs for the afternoon ideal weather prevailed for the sport at Churchill Downs this afternoon The clear ¬ ing of the skies however was a little too late for the track to gain full advantage of the pleasant sunshiny weather and the at ¬ tendance though considerably larger than yesterday when rain fell throughout the day was below the average averageThe The track remained muddy but the bot ¬ tom was firm and several of the winners turned in creditable time There was an increase in the size of the fields over the previous day when only fortynine horses paraded for the eight races yet most of the winners won by good margins marginsCambril Cambril a maiden unsexed fouryearold son of Brilliant and Campmeat racing for the Charlie Stable of Charles Leist tri ¬ umphed over a band of nonwinners and winners of but one race in the Central Park Purse a threequarters affair that was fourth on the card for one of the more im ¬ portant victories Under an alert and hustling ride by the veteran Joe Cavens the winner led from flagfall to finish with Ridge Mor second and Spanish Red third Prince Vic led the others in the field of eight eightSPIRITED SPIRITED FINISH FINISHAt At all stages of the sprint Ridge Mor and Spanish Red were second and third respec ¬ tively and both of their riders were after them in vigorous fashion throughout the stretch drive Neither however could do anything to threaten the winner though Cavens was forced to shake up the gelding in the final furlong furlongThe The winner third choice to Ridge Mor and Spanish Red ran the distance in 114 114Mrs Mrs L M Walkers Cattell Stable colors were seen in front for the first time dur ¬ ing the meeting when Hour Time a gelded son of Flight of Time was a decisive and surprising winner of the opening race for maiden juveniles of his sex Hour Time led throughout and at the end of the five fur ¬ longs was running easily two and onehalf lengths before First Entry which was the third choice stronger support being accord ¬ ed Chief Cherokee and John Marcum which finished fourth and sixth respectively respectivelyChief Chief Cherokee was closest to the winner in the early stages but he grew very tired falling back steadily in the last threesix ¬ teenths where First Entry came on to out ¬ stay Prince John for secondary honors honorsOLD OLD CAYUGA SCORES SCORESOld Old Cayuga now in his ninth year and long a Downs favorite was in front for the first time this season when he led home Rolanda Lynvete and Just Buck and six others in the second race The Shady Brook Farm veteran was the choice and except for Rolandas ability to lead for more than five eighths had his opponents at his mercy practically from the start Overtaking Ro ¬ landa in the final furlong the victor drew away until his final advantage was one length and a half Lynvete beaten eight lengths for second took third by a nose from Just Buck BuckEmpress Empress Wu daughter of KaiSang com ¬ pleted a double for the Cattell Stable and scored her first success when she won from eight other juvenile fillies over the five furlongs distance in the third race Like the previous Cattell winner she was ridden by L Balaski BalaskiThe The winner went to the front as Wise Baby the early pacemaker tired soon after the stretch and though inclined to loaf Ba laskis vigorous riding kept her going well enough to remain out of danger Amaze ¬ ment came up to beat Gobet by a neck for second Both the runnerup and Gobet were the public choices and had some bad breaks Continued on twentysecond page CAMBRIL EARNS PURSE Continued from first page to overcome Amazement going wide into the stretch after being pinched back on the turn while Gobet left the stalls none too alertly alertlyMiss Miss Kentucky owned by Irvine Kort local horseman and eligible for the Ken ¬ tucky Oaks was a driving winner of the Bowling Green Purse also for older maidens and winners of but one race This was the fifth race and at the finish of the three quarters the Kprt representative had J E Wideners Fairsickle beaten a neck with Gooseflesh which received most of the play and astride which Lester Balaski was trying for his third win six lengths back Goose flesh led Vellum which saved fourth money by five lengths lengthsC C C Van Meter Lexington turfman who will have one of the largest stables at Chur ¬ chill the coming season has taken a call on Lee Hardy and he reports to the stable at Washington Park the first of next week
