HOMEWOOD 111 June 18 Edward R Bradleys Black Helen turned in her second winning performance in as many chances when she easily accounted for the best of the programmed events as the Washington Park Jockey Clubs twentyseven day meet ¬ ing entered the final week at the popular Homewood course This was the West Pull ¬ man Purse and the Bradley filly a daughter of Black Toney and La Troienne took sev ¬ eral good juveniles into camp the race re suiting in the first defeat in three starts for the Rookwood Farms Albuquerque which finished third Mrs P A B Wideners Hasty Glance was the runnerup four lengths away from the winner and six be fore Albuquerque AlbuquerqueWithout Without taking from the unquestioned quality of the winners performance Albu j querque had so much trouble negotiating the turn that it prevented him from showing to best advantage This is the youngster that had a narrow escape in the Derby eve fire at Churchill Downs and he was making his first appearance since that experience fol lowing which he was so nervous that Jack Howard sent him to the farm to run out for a few days daysToday Today he outbroke his opponents and de ¬ spite the strong manner in which Charles Corbett tugged at the reins in an effort to keep him from bearing out was able to out run his rivals to the stretch turn Here he went out badly both the winner and runner up passing him on the inside before Corbett could straighten him out outTOO TOO MUCH RESTRAINT RESTRAINTBounding Bounding into a long lead approaching the last furlong Black Helen came on to an easy score while Hasty Glance held second secure Near the finish Corbett took too much of a hold on Albuquerque and easing himself almost to a walk he barely missed dropping third honors to Brown Feathers FeathersAside Aside from the scare she furnished near j the finish Brown Feathers was never aj strong factor The others namely Bluej Lillian Maple Prince and No Change also found it beyond their capacity to run with the leaders leadersThough Though drenched late yesterday the track was in surprisingly good condition with fast footing prevailing for the feature For the opening three contests the footing was good Fine weather prevailed and the attendance was much larger than on the corresponding day of the previous week An accident in which jockey Pete Crops suffered a painful but not serious injury when his foot was crushed between the inner rail and his mount Texas Maid when the latter swerved entering the stretch marred the opening race The filly was in insecond second place at the time but Groos injury was so painful that he was obliged to pull her up and had to be assisted from the sad ¬ dle After treatment he was able to ride in inthe the next race raceKWAMUDI KWAMUDI TO FORE FOREThe The race resulted in a victory for the French Lick Springs Stables Kwamudi which led throughout and in a driving fin ¬ ish defeated Playmore by a short length Brother Lou drove to the finish of the five furlpngs in third place three lengths away from Playmore and a nose before Sam Alex ¬ ander The latter along with Napoleon W and Grey Pal performed in noteworthy fashion fashionRacing Racing to the front as Bay Servant and Secret Tryst the early leaders went wide entering the stretch and fighting stubbornly to hold the lead long enough to win by a head J G Goodwins Norman D furnished a mild surprise by accounting for the second race for threeyearolds When straightened out Secret Tryst came on to furnish the chief contention and though gradually re ¬ ducing the victors margin her courageous challenge was in vain as J Nachel kept the Goodwin racer in front Notwithstanding the fact that she tired badly finishing five lengths back of Secret Tryst Bay Servant was good enough to be home Frisco Westko and seven others over the seven furlongs course in the third race In gaining this popular score the Davison veteran was slightly lamed and it is probable that he may be inactive for a short time Paul Keester astride Infin ¬ ity smothered what appeared a real dan ¬ ger in the stretch when he guided his mount a zigzag course blocked Westko and Polly Diskin as he returned to the inside of the course near the finish Infinity went to the front after a quarter where he headed Frisco and the latter held to second there ¬ after Westko and Polly Diskin which swung to the inside entering the stretch were gaining when their course was blocked by the victor victorChartres Chartres scored his second win of the meeting and another score for the public choices when under a well judged ride at the hands of Lee Hardy he was good enough to down Reservist Our Admiral Grayback and four others over a mile in the Sibley Boulevard Claiming Purse which was the fifth race Hardy had the winner in front after threeeighths and withstanding Re ¬ servists mild threat in the stretch run won by a little more than a length Some six lengths intervened between Reservist and Our Admiral at the finish and the latter second for a brief time rounding the far turn was in third place the entire closing three furlongs The winner covered the dis ¬ tance in 138 He raced under Mrs J Gross ¬ mans silks silksJimmy Jimmy King rode another winner when Claude Hunts Try Fair which was confi ¬ dently backed turned back a large band over a mile and oneeighth in the sixth race King had the victorious threeyearold in front from a few jumps after the start and he won easily as Golden Words outstayed Tut Tut for second place Anita Ormont which tired after furnishing the early con ¬ tention was fourth
