FAIRMOUNT FOOTING SLOW Oaseyville Purse Heads Program at Popular CbUinsville Course Local Favorites Provide Entertainment for Big Crowd Track Dries Out Rap ¬ idly Under Harrows COLLINSVILLE 111 June 18 The second hard rain of the meeting visited Fairmount Park Sunday evening and when the horses were called to the post for the first race the track was termed slow The course was sloppy Sunday after the heavy downpour and heavy for morning workouts Monday Much work on the part of track superin ¬ tendent Placide Frigerio helped the soil wonderfully and it was drying out rapidly during racing hours hoursThe The feature today was the Caseyville Purse at a mile in which such local favorites as Aureboh Northern Sir Transbird The Trainer Moiras Chief Owen Curly Head and Lugcn Luggage met Much of the sup ¬ port was given Transbird Aurebon and Northern Sir all winners at the meeting meetingThe The weather was partly cloudy with threats of rain in the offing but a stiff wind blowing across the course took care of the lowhanging clouds Another large Monday crowd was out for the seven races programmed programmedJacqueline Jacqueline D found a track to her liking in the first race and scored an easy vicr tory when she defeated Benediction the favorite Polle and eight other twoyearolds at four and onehalf furlongs R Tilden had the mount on the winner and rated the daughter of Blackwood expertly He had the R T Watts filly off fast and opened up a two lengths lead before going a quarter When in the van Tilden took hold of his mount entering the stretch and could have won much farther Her winning margin was two lengths with Benediction holding a three lengths advantage over Polle at the finish finishMaiden Maiden threeyearolds started in the sec ¬ ond race over six furlongs and H H Cho ¬ pins Poppinalong left the nonwinners ranks when she was a head before Friend Tom at the finish with Missionary Girl an outsider third two lengths to the rear rearThe The Winner was ridden by J Dyer and the veteran followed the early pacemakers easily while racing in a contending position Entering the stretch the leaders went wide where the better footing prevailed and Dyer slipped through next to the rail and shook off Missionary Girl in the final drive but had to be hard urged to outstay the deter ¬ mined challenge of Friend Tom TomAfter After shaking off Minnequa in the first quarter Primer Mrs N Howards consist ¬ ent fouryearold son of Bud Lerner in ¬ dulged in a stretch battle with Best Man in the third race which was decided over the five and onehalf furlongs route In win ¬ ning his fifth race of the year Primer had to show rare gameness to stand off the challenge of Best Man to earn a nose ver ¬ dict from the veteran racer Best Man passed the winner at the sixteenth post but F A Smith managed to keep the son of Bud Lerner going in the final stages under strong pressure to gain the verdict Chilla Lee was a nose before Beige to save third four lengths back of Best Man ManThe The second best race on the card was the fourth in which seven sprinters met at five and onehalf furlongs The winner was pro ¬ duced by M McClead when his Toltec was an easy winner over Royal Rock a long priced horse with Wigrose third thirdApprentice Apprentice H Manifold had the winner off in front and opened a lead of more than two lengths in the first quarter with Lillian Tobin Lessing and Valley racing heads apart Entering the stretch Toltec in ¬ creased his lead to three lengths with Lil ¬ lian Tobin and Valley dropping back and Lessing holding the runnerup position Tol tecs advantage was increased to five lengths at the eighth post with Lessing giv ¬ ing up the chase and being replaced by Royal Rock and Wigrose They raced this way the entire distance of the stretch with Royal Rock and Wigrose making up some ground on the winner
