I [ ROYAL GUARD SENSATIONALLY « Snperb Ride by Coucci Big Factor in Winning Race. ♦ Large Crowd Present Despite Intense Heat —Small Fields Furnish Thrilling Sport at Empire City. • YONKERS, N. Y., July 6.— Mrs. Henry Ughettas Royal Guard was winner of the best offering of the Empire City Racing As-J sociation Friday, when in a sensational fin-j ish he took the measure of Maxwell Howards St. Stephens, with Mrs. Clyde Phillips Longford finishing a distant third. This was a dash over the short six furlongs and while the field was of the plater variety it furnished an excellent contest and brought into play the riding skill and energy of Silvio Coucci. Royal Guard was particularly sluggish In leaving his stall, though the start was a good one and he was badly outrun in the early stages, but Coucci never gives up and he found his way through the field to victory. Another sweltering day made the Hill Top course a pleasant place to spend the afternoon, and a big crowd enjoyed the cooling breezes that blew across the grounds all afternoon. The fields were small in most of the races, but there were keen contests and the sport was good. In this dash that brought the best field together St. Stephens was the one to set a sizzling pace from the break. He was just ns alert from his stall as Royal Guard was tardy and Johnny Gilbert, making every use of that advantage sped along until he was a couple of lengths clear. Once in front and racing along on the rail, he took hold of the son of My Plav but maintained a pace that held the command. The Rock and Follow Thru were the ones to challenge the Howard colt in the back stretch run, while Royal Guard was racing in last place and at the end of the first furlong there did not seem to be a remote chance of his earning any part of the purse. fc£ Stephens held to his lead steadily until The Rock succumbed and Follow Thru was also tiring of his challenge. Longford then moved up to threaten, but St. Stephens was still in command as the stretch was reached, but Coucci had roused Koyal Guard and he was weaving his wav through when the short stretch was reached Nearmg the furlong pole, he had reached second place to dispose of Longford and then he went after St. Stephens. There was not much fight left in the Howard colt and and7LL*! °/ a.Atruggle R°y*l Guard showed m front and ridden out smartly he was over the line winner by a length. The others had weakened badly in that last furlong and Longford was four lengths back of the tired St. Stephens, but five lengths before Buster •tsoy. Kungsholm, racing for J. H.
