C. r Gearys Ramrod, an odds-on favorite and t variously haihd as one of the most promis- 2 ing two-year-olds in Kentucky, finished last J in the Slickaway Farm Handicap, feature of t Fridays program at Latonia. t The winner of this race, a dash of five 1 and one-half furlongs for two-year-olds, was 1 the Cattell Stables Elwawa, while Paradisi- J cal was second and Empress Wu, coupled I with the winner, was third. Wild Gus, Cerro t and Prince Han were the only other i starters. j Elwawa, with L Hale up, raced Ramrod 1 into the ground before they reached the stretch. Ramrod broke in front, but El- 1 wawa went right out with the Geary gelding I and the two raced head and head around the turn, but when they reached the straight- 1 away Ramrod was through. a Elwawa stuck to his guns and went on to win easily by two and a half lengths, i Paradisical in turn finishing two lengths in 1 front of Empress Wu, which nosed out Wild Gus for third money. Aboard Elwawa, Hale rode his first win- 1 ner for the Cattell Stable, to which he now 1 is under contract. A drop in the temperature today made the weather ideal and a fine crowd was out to view the sport. The track was at its I Mrs. M. Ahrens Ramus, making his only - start of the meeting, drove under the wire 1 a nose victor over Princess ivory in the : opening dash, a sprint of three-quarters of j a mile. Never far back, the six-year-old I gelding gradually improved his position going - around the upper turn and at the head I of the stretch set sail for Princess Ivory, which set the pace. The winner got up in 1 the closing strides to get the verdict by the ; barest of margins. Flowery Lady was the » favorite nnd she closed well to grab third I money after a slow beginning, nosing out t the aged Kadiak for that end of the purse. Darnaby and Thompsons Charlie Jr., overlooked . in the betting, was a driving winner of the second race, in which he graduated 1 from the maiden two-year-old ranks. Coming . from behind in the stretch, the colt got t up just in time to get the judges decision 1 by a head. Monks Shawl, the pacemaker and favorite, led up to the last few yards and finished j second, while Dick Star ran third, four r lengths behind the leaders. Elegant Miss was among tLe leaders for a time, but she tired in the stretch run. The winner was ridden by L. McDermott and paid 5.60 for . Ridge Blond was made a top-heavy favorite in the third race, which brought together a cheap band of sprinters, but the best she could do was to finish third behind Forest Avenue and Midson. Ridge Blond got to the front turning into the home stretch, but there she tired and was lucky to finish ahead of the fast-closing Morning Fair. Under a strong ride by the veteran Frankie Burley, Mrs. W. H. Buckners Stall Man was returned the winner of the fourth race, another at six furlongs. Riding his first winner of the meeting, Burley rushed his mount into an early lead and maintained it throughout, leading Wise Cross to the wire by a half length. Delma Dunn finished third in the field of twelve. A. J. Stallings Royal Sport and Meadie Wings Sweet Man staged a thrilling stretch duel with Royal Sport getting the decision at the end of the sixth race. At the head of the stretch the two of them had the race to themselves with E. Pool outriding G. * Hardy to get the verdict. Third money went to Respond in the field of six. Royal Sport raced the first part of the race under restraint as Sweet Man set the pace.
