STerts,e aout evenlv divided at the conclusion of the 1934 season as to whether Edward Riley Bradleys Balladier or Joseph E. Wideners Chance Sun was the better two-year-o Id. In the Belmont Futurity, Chance Sun wa firlt and BaHa.! leL S6COnf Ut- n their comparison of the two colts with this Intafa guide the observers took into consideration the doubt about the Bradley runne? bting a good mudder, and also the trouble he met with right after the start g Off his juvenile record Balladier must he considered as one of the outstanding prospects among the three-year-olds for this ? season. It is significant tta he is not among the eligibles to the Kentucky Derby, as that is one race Bradley dearly loves to j win. However, Balladier suffered a slightly f bowed tendon just before the running of the Eastern Shore Handicap and trainer H. J. Thompson is giving the colt plenty of time to grow out of that injury, if that is pos-. sible. Therefore, Balladier is side-stepping - spring campaigning and the Withers and . Belmont Stakes are his first major objec-j tives. Balladier did not make his first appearance under silks until August at Saratoga f in an allowance event. He was well sup-r ported and came from behind to win in the dash of five and a half furlongs, his victims including Ouragan, Credulous arid Fire- thorn, the latter also making his first start. . A few days later Balladier went into the . United States Hotel Stakes an equal favor- ite with Try Sympathy and led all the way : over the three-quarters course to defeat l Today by two and a half lengths, with Polar : Flight in third place. Other good two-year-. olds in that field were Omaha, Supreme l Court, Bluebeard and Sailor Beware. Polar Flight almost kept step with the Bradley ; colt during the opening half mile, but , through the stretch Balladier asserted his . class and slowly drew away. He carried 117 pounds and received weight only from Try . Sympathy, whose impost was 124 pounds. Coupled with Boxthorn, Balladier went l into the Hopeful Stakes as the favorite, but this event proved the only one of his five starts in which he failed to share in the money. He stumbled right at the start and was in close quarters going down the backstretch. with the result th?t he was unable to hit his stride. He finished eighth as the victory went to Psychic Bid, with Rosemont second and Esposa third: The field was one of the best brought together in the two-year-old division last season. The Champagne Stakes at six and a half furlongs straightaway next attracted Balladier, and he led all the way to triumph by a nose over Omaha, to which he was giving seven pounds. Under his inmost of 124 pounds the Bradley colt covered the distance in 1:16, for a new track record. Omaha hooked up with Balladier near the finish, but was unable to get by the son of Black Toney, but the pair was well ahead f f1 J?ye- others in the beaten field included Boxthorn, Tangerloo, Candy Prince, Sailor Beware and Black Gift. Then came the Futurity, in which Balladier encountered muddy going, which he had dodged in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes at Saratoga, a race that Chance Sun also won. After encountering his trouble early in the Futurity, Balladier was rushed forward to join Rosemont in a fight for the leadership, but the combination of mud and early effort took its toll and he was unable to stave off the strong challenge of Chance Sun in the final quarter. Moving to Havre de Grace for what was to have been his final effort of the season, Balladier showed up on the morning of the Eastern Shore Handicap running with a filled leg, and he was unable to accept the engagement for which he was the public choice. He was immediately shipped to the Bradley farm, where a long rest has done much to strengthen the weakened tendon. Balladier is a well-made but rangy black son of the aging Black Toney, sire of many other first-class horses, and Blue Warbler, by North Star III., another veteran stallion which has done very well for the master of Idle Hour Farm. Blue Warbler won the Matron and other stakes, and also produced Barn Swallow, another smart filly. Through Black Toney Balladier gets the blood of ? Commando and Ben Brush; through his dam he traces to Sunstar, St. Simon, Thrush r and other stout English, horses. Balladier 5 showed as a two-year-old that he had speed I and class, and he has the breeding and is of a type to perform creditably over long r distances. His chances to rank high among the three-year-olds depends very much, Mow-ever, on his soundness. ? . . 1
