WHITE COCKADE AGAIN Son of Diavolo White Favor Wins Youthful Stakes in Fine Style Remains Unbeaten After Splendid SplendidPerformance Performance Legion Surprises Surprisesin in Flushing Handicap NEW YORK N Y May 11 White Cock ¬ ade swiftrunning juvenile son of Diavolo and White Favor that races for Ogden Phipps is still unbeaten He galloped off with the Youthful Stakes at Jamaica Sat ¬ urday in a fashion to indicate that he is the best twoyearold that has yet been shown Acting badly at the post the colt was banished to a position outside the start ¬ ing machine and he broke last of the six engaged but he went away with such a great burst of speed that he was quickly right in the contention contentionHe He stepped away from the others with ridiculous ease and at the finish after run ¬ ning the five furlongs in 59 he was in hand The Greentree Stables Galsac raced to the place well before the Sage Stables Pullman which beat C V Whitneys Mi ¬ crobe for third The Youthful carried a net value of 3220 to the winner winnerFor For the final Saturday of the Jamaica meeting the Metropolitan Jockey Club fi ¬ nally had delightful weather and the course was crowded to capacity The sport was of the finest order and in addition to the Youthful there was the Flushing Handicap of a mile and a sixteenth This furnished something of a surprise when Mrs L H Nimkoffs Legionary the light weight of the party won all the way over William Wood ¬ wards Vicar and Mrs John Hertz Watch Him HimGeorge George Cassidy was patient with White Cockade but when it was evident the colt would not stand in his stall he was sent to the outside which was something of a han ¬ dicap at the fivefurlong mark The start was a good one and White Cockade was last away but he was not last for long Pullman and Galsac had left on the same stride and Galsac was soon showing the way but Horn rushed White Cockade up on the outside until before a furlong had been covered he was right at the throat latch of the Bud Lerner colt Then he was on by to go into a lead of a length and a half halfTOYS TOYS WITH HIS RIVALS RIVALSAs As White Cockade moved into command Horn took a slight hold of his head and he simply toyed with his rivals the rest of the way Galsac held to second place and he stood a stretch drive gamely when Coucci vainly attempted to run down the Diavolo colt to be beaten three lengths This driv ¬ ing of Galsac carried him out seven furlongs before Pullman and the Sage colt was doing his best to beat Microbe which had closed with excellent courage Quick Look and Higher Cloud the other starters were never contenders contendersLegionary Legionary a fouryearold daughter of Co ¬ hort and Spider Web that performs under the blue and white colors of Mrs L H Nim koff won her third consecutive purse at the meeting when she raced to a front running success in the mile and a sixteenth of the Flushing Handicap She was the light ¬ weight of a field of four under 100 pounds and turned in a fast mile and a sixteenth in 145 to register by her own length at the direct expense of Vicar from the Belair Stud Watch Him racing for Mrs John Hertz and burdened with JL16 pounds was getting four from Vicar which was third thirdLegionary Legionary with Howell up had too much speed for her rivals at the weights Vicar ran up behind her leaving the gate and made a game effort to overhaul the Nimkoff representative but to no avail He was sec ¬ ond all the way The winner was the out ¬ sider in the betting with Watch Him 8 to 5 in most quotations Good Goods could never get to the pace and was a well beaten fourth and last lastWITHHOLD WITHHOLD DECISION DECISIONThe The stewards deliberated for many min ¬ utes after the result of the mile and seventy yards fifth race before sanctioning the order of finish This found Count Tetrarch the offender winning his second purse in as many starts for Mrs John Hertz He beat Jim John a warm favorite by a length and a half with Old Tetrarch permitted that horse to race in bothering both the beaten Mannie caught in the middle and Jim John on the rail Count Tetrarch thereupon drew away to win at his leisure by a length and a half Jim John came again to take the place and Mannie quit to a walk as Old Story charged along on his own courage to take third at the end endThe The stewards took their time reaching a decision No rider that she ran down H C Phipps Fra Diavolo and William Ziegler Jrs Sunanair was rather a distant third thirdHighdry Highdry and Fra Diovolo were the ones to cut out the running and early in the action they went into a long lead over the others Pelerine was in third place but she was unable to make up any ground on the leading team until the stretch was reached There the pacemakers went out a bit while the filly saved ground Highdry tired sud ¬ denly and Fra Diovolo looked all over a win ¬ ner until right at the end Pelerine slipped through on the inside to win by half a length Sunanair was four lengths away in third place placeEarl Earl Sandes charge Polycletus scored his second purse in as many races this season and his third in as many starts at this track when he galloped to a threelength triumph over Mrs W Plunkett Stewarts Chance Ray and four others of the grade C caliber in the second offering The son of Polymelian which races for Col M Howard ran the distance under his impost of 123 pounds top weight in 112 over a fast track The dis ¬ appointing Sandy Bill was favorite with Polycletus well backed at 9 to 5 He thor ¬ oughly exploded the theory he must have mud Third two lengths behind the runner up which was a warm paddock tip was Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Arena Sandy Bill was a welldone fourth fourthSandy Sandy Bill and Polycletus had all the speed in the race Silvio Coucci one of the lead ¬ ing riders at the meeting was just biding his time astride the winner as he caught Sandy Bill in the first sixteenth and ran that son of Wise Counsellor into the ground going into the turn turnSpanish Spanish Way fiveyearold Spanish Prince II gelding which races for the B B Stable took a purse on his own courage when he accounted for the sixth race which brought out half a dozen 2000 platers The winner was favored at 11 to 10 despite the presence in his saddle of McManus With a competent rider he would have been oddon Second a half length back was Major General on which the weakfinishing Robertson had the mount Five lengths away Hoops was third Major General and Spanish Way alternated in the lead throughout going along almost head and head from the clubhouse
