TORO NANCY TRIUMPHS 1934 Arlington Futurity Winner Earns Purse at Homewood Return of Good Weather Results in Big WeekDay Crowd and In ¬ crease in Mutuel Handle HOMEWOOD 111 June 11 Toro Nancy victorious in the rich Arlington Futurity last summer scored her first triumph since by accounting for the fifth event at Washing ¬ ton Park this afternoon which brought out one of the best fields of the day Sporting the rosecolored silks of Norman Churchs Northway Stable the daughter of Toro and Vive America ran the six furlongs over a slow track in l13 to defeat E R Bradleys Born Happy by a length and a half with Calumet Farms Calumet Dick taking third among the seven threeyearolds four lengths farther away awayA A return to bright weather resulted in one of the largest weekday crowds during the meeting as well as a corresponding increase in the mutucl handle handleToro Toro Nancy although making her first start since the winter season in California was installed the favorite because of recent good trials Well ridden by Charles Mc ¬ Tague Toro Nancy dominated the race throughout Each of the seven starters fin ¬ ished in the order in which they were backed by the public publicBeginning Beginning from the inside position with a rush Toro Nancy had little difficulty get ¬ ting to the front She was closely pressed by Born Happy in the run down the back stretch and around the turn but only be ¬ cause McTague was rating her along Calu ¬ met Dick had been hustled into third posi ¬ tion but he was unable to threaten the two leaders leadersNOT NOT DERBY ELIGIBLE ELIGIBLEIn In the stretch Born Happy was vigorously ridden in an effort to overtake the Cali ¬ forniaowned miss but McTague only had to shake her up occasionally to maintain com ¬ mand and at the end Toro Nancy had some ¬ thing left Born Happy had no trouble in getting second honors while Calumet Dick was hard ridden to save third from Foggy Night Toro Nancy is not an eligible for the American Derby DerbyWest West Main veteran gelding owned by C A Peck Chicago sportsman scored his fourth straight victory out of five starts at the meeting by winning the Carolan Purse which vied with the fifth race for chief interest In defeating Mrs John Hertz Pairbypair Eskay Stables Sweeping Light and two others over the seven furlongs dis ¬ tance in 126 West Main gave Johnny Longden his third winning mount and a per ¬ fect record for the afternoon afternoonFavored Favored in the wagering as were several other winners of the afternoon West Main was rated along back of the early pace set by Pairbypair with Sweeping Light in closest attendance until reaching the stretch where he gained steadily on the out ¬ side to take the lead just after passing the furlong post postIn In the final eighth West Main gradually increased his advantage under steady handling until he was a length ahead of Pairbypair at the finish A similar distance separated the latter from Sweeping Light Both of the latter tired after giving way to the winner while Mad Frump and Gusto the other starters made up a slight amount of ground in the late stages stagesODDSON ODDSON CHOICE FAILS FAILSDilwin Dilwin daughter of Galetian and Sweet Lady making her first start brought about the defeat of the oddson favorite Thatagal in the opening event a dash of five fur ¬ longs for maiden juvenile fillies Leading all the way the F P Letellier filly defeated the Dixiana miss by a head with Belleek taking third a length and a half farther away Ridden by J Longden Dilwin dis ¬ played high speed from the start over the slow track but while she showed the way she acted greenly Thatagal followed the leader closely around the turn and was just moving up entering the stretch when Bol ¬ lock came up fast on the outside and Arcaro took her to the inside where she made a bid that just fell short of victory victoryLongden Longden also rode the winner of the sec ¬ ond race the well played Fritter Circle car ¬ Kissie second and Paper Prof ¬ its third thirdFritter Fritter Circle took the lead on the far turn and aided by good rating enjoyed a clear margin in the final four furlongs dur ¬ ing which Kissie and Paper Profits did their racing in the same order as they finished Shirley B accounted for fourth money moneyArt Art Goldblatt saddled another winner for Mrs R B Fairbanks when the Boot to Boot filly Bartering Kate raced home well in front in a field of six brought together at threequarters in the third race A dis ¬ appointing performance by Captain Red fa ¬ vorite and which ownertrainer C E Davi son tried to have excused by the stewards marred the race raceBartering Bartering Kate followed the early leader Lo under snug restraint for about half a mile then moved to the front and always had the runnerup Our David at a safe distance while covering the last furlong where Terrier came up to take down third honors Lo faltering badly in the run through the final straightaway The favorite occupied third place for about a quarter then shortened stride badly and finished last lastThe The fourth race under allowance condi ¬ tions and for threeyearolds which had not won two races produced the first local triumph when French Princess daughter of Epinard owned by Mrs John Marsch was returned victorious Only five opposed her and after leading from the opening quarter she strode past the line of finish an easy winner two and onehalf lengths before Ap ¬ prehend which was the choice The latter widely outraced the others finishing the six furlongs six lengths before Lisa Belle to which went minor honors L Haas was astride the winner
