Swashbuckler a Marylandbred son of Canter and Pinnacle which races for Mrs Janon Fisher Jr carried his speed to a successful conclusion in the twoyearold dash which was the prin ¬ cipal race on this afternoons program at Rockingham Park In the juvenile handicap Saturday the same colt quit badly but he had no such horse as Postage Due to carry him along today At the finish he was slightly more than two lengths in advance of Bright and Early with Piccolo missing the place by a length The winner turned in a corking effort in completing the dis ¬ tance in 100 over a drying out track Highly touted since early May he raced to those predictions in what was his sec ¬ ond victory in five starts The achievement gave Red Pollard a double as that lad had taken the initial race also a twoyear old affair with Jubilee Jim JimPollard Pollard had Swashbuckler away fast but Squawker left as rapidly to dispute the leadership with him as they galloped along the far side of the track while Bright and Early went up fast on the outside to be right with the pair Piccolo was shy on early speed and well off the first three while De ¬ liberate dropped completely out of it at the start startAs As they swung arourd the turn the Can ¬ ter colt gained a short lead and at the turn for home he shook off all opponents draw ¬ ing away slowly in the stretch Pollard took no chances however and hustled him right along to the final pole Bright and Early a forward contender throughout took the outside and the best going He continued gamely under pressure through the stretch to gain the place with scant difficulty difficultyPiccolo Piccolo was lacking in early speed and badly outrun for the first three furlongf He made up some ground under punishment thereafter but never troubled the leading Saturday in which race he was beaten by a length and a half by A G Vanderbilts Winter Sport and only a neck by the good colt Postage Due DueThe The finish in the second race at five fur ¬ longs was a thriller At the conclusion of this dash a split of the preceding event for juvenile nonwinners Mrs Elmer Truemans Sea Ted was a scant nose in advance of Madame Zero with Hcrondas another neck away The three battled in close order from the quarter post to the stand the Teddy colt just managing to last long enough In another stride Madame Zero would have pre ¬ vailed vailedGolden Golden Vein proved the first choice of the day to score The son of Golden Spire which races for Mrs P D Watts was three lengths in advance of Chewawa at the end of the five and a half furlongs claimer that was third on the card with Cherokee Sal another two and a half lengths away The winner had the speed to join Bromide in the back stretch run and put that quitting geld ¬ ing away rapidly He drew away to a wide lead on the turn and scored with speed to spare spareParadun Paradun a daughter of Dunlin and Pa ¬ rade made the score for favorites two as she raced to a half length victory in the six furlongs dash which followed the feature attraction Carl Hanford put the J U Grat ton filly in front at the start and she made all the running hanging on gamely under a hard hand ride through the stretch Closest to her at the finish was High Hand II which saved second place from Witan by a length lengthThe The sixth completed a double for owner J U Gratton trainer Bill Irvine and jockey Carl Hanford when High Torque romped to a threelength victory The daughter of High Cloud and Torque quickly raced to the front after beginning from the rail posi ¬ tion and easily mvoed away from her oppo ¬ nents in the back stretch run Making the turn she opened up a commanding lead and in the stretch was going along well in hand handAmerican American Emblem went up fast on the turn and hard urged through the stretch easily disposed of the five other hopefuls Gifted Lady did well to be third a length and a half behind the runnerup Wall was kicked in the fleshy part of his leg above the knee by Gifted Lady while removing the tack after dismounting The injury while painful was not serious seriousApprentice Apprentice Johnson stole major honors with Percy Pikes Sand Baby in the seventh race when he went through along the rail to dispose of the pacemaking Lonmeg and then turned back the final bid of Moralist At the end he was a length in front of the last named with Lonmeg missing second place by a half length lengthLonmeg Lonmeg had the early speed but was hard pressed all the way by Moralist and this took much out of her She was under the whip in the stretch but to no avail Moral ¬ ist was closest to the pace all the way but had to go wide at the head of the stretch and this cost him the race
