SWOPE ADVOCATES PARI MUTUELS FOR NEW YORK AQUEDUCT N Y June 11 Herbert Bayard Swope chairman of the New York Racing Commission came out for parimu tuels for New York Monday in the fol ¬ lowing statement Wholly reliable infor ¬ mation comes to me that New Jersey this week will pass its parlmutuel authorization perhaps on Wednesday or Thursday Fur ¬ ther I am informed that passage by the legislature means passage by the people at the referendum referendumThere There is a story in this for the news ¬ papers and a big part of the story is the grave consequences the mutuel racing in New Jersey may have on the sport in New York YorkAs As chairman of the New York State Racing Commission I and my colleagues Messrs Whitney and Sloane would be blind if we did not recognize the threat that is contained in this department I have re ¬ peatedly warned the racing associations members of The Jockey Club the governor and members of the legislature but there has been no organized effort to protect our interests I do not know who was interested in beating the parimutuel bill in New York in this last session but I know that what the reason may have been it was a penny wise poundfoolish philosophy We beat the mutuels leaving New Jersey a chance to steal home homeThe The solution for New York is simple As I said at the commissions meeting to the press a constitutional amendment should be passed under which a statute could be written that would be permissive both as to the mutuels and to the present form of bookmaking bookmakingIf If something is not done and done at once we shall run the danger of being smothered in this state by New Jersey JerseyAlready Already I am informed that a site has been obtained near the George Washington bridge and prominent New York racing men have been approached to join the New Jersey enterprises I have no censure for the state of New Jersey or those who pro ¬ pose working under its protection My con ¬ cern is over our stupidity in this state our refusal to protect ourselves so that racing which reaches its finest form here may not be driven from its natural home
