AMERICAN DERBY NEAR Chicagos Famous Race to Be Run at Washington Park June 22 Practically All the Outstanding 3 YearOlds of Year Including Omaha Are Eligible HOMEWOOD 111 June 11 The battle ¬ ground for the last skirmish in the fight for the threeyearold championship of 1935 already virtually award by acclaim to the Belair Studs great chestnut colt Omaha off his victories in the Kentucky Derby Preak ness and Belmont Stakes shifts to Chicago shortly With Omaha facing the turfs great level ¬ ler weight every threeyearold of cham ¬ pionship caliber that is still in training is expected to go to the post a fortnight hence at new Washington Park for the twenty seventh running of the historic 25000 added American Derby at a mile and a quarter quarterWhen When nominations for Chicagos most famous stake closed on May 1 there had been named seventytwo threeyearolds some of them as yet nearly untried But racing fortune has been kind to this new ¬ est edition of the American Derby for no threeyearold that can still be called a title contender is missing from the list of Bllgibles BllgiblesMost Most of the seventytwo have of course already eliminated themselves Omahas trio of smashing victories has convinced the owners of many others that their thor ¬ oughbreds are not possessed of as much speed and stamina as they had supposed in early spring But because Omaha must carry 126 pounds under the conditions of the stake and must concede from three to twelye pounds to some of the threeyear olds that have been chasing him there are still a number of owners and trainers that wish to be shown that William Woodwards chestnut colt is the big horse of 1935 1935Two Two weeks in advance of the race the list of probable starters adds up to about twenty Most of them will face the barrier in the hope that Omaha cannot give away over a mile and a quarter as many pounds as the conditions of the American Derby say he must The following are the leading candidates for the American Derby DerbyOmaha Omaha Black Helen Bloodroot Rosemont Firethorn Whiskolo Roman Soldier Cold Shoulder Nellie Flag Toro Flight Prince Splendor Psychic Bid Special Agent Count Arthur Tearout Whopper Advantage Polar Flight Debs Delight Bluebeard Gillie Blackbirder BlackbirderThere There is still a small group that has riot yet crossed Omahas path and among them there is a possibility that there may be found a better threeyearold Most promi ¬ nent of this group is Col E R Bradleys sensational filly Black Helen The winner of the Florida Derby and the Coaching Club American Oaks as a threeyearold and un ¬ beatable in her early twoyearold form many horsemen believe Black Helen has a better race in her slim legs than any she has yet shown She is now training well at Washington Park ParkAmericas Americas top threeyearolds are expected to begin arriving at the rebuilt Homewood race course within a few days to join those that have been racing there since the meet ¬ ing began
