Here and There on the Turf i iGood Good Bace Likely at Detroit DetroitFirethorn Firethorn May Be Favorite King Saxon Champion Miler Chicago Bacing Very Healthy j With the Belmbnt Stakes out of the way Interest in threeyearold racing is turned to Saturdays running of the Detroit Derby a 25000 added affair at one mile and three aixteenths whose inaugural a year ago was taken by the illustrious Cavalcade Omaha reigning sensation of the division at this time will not participate in the Detroit Derby nor will Rosemont victor over the longstriding son of Gallant Fox in the Withers and third in the Belmont Stakes Omaha Is taking a brief rest while Rose mont suffered a minor injury in his recent race and will be out of campaigning for sev ¬ eral weeks Firethorn second to Omaha in the Preakness as well as in the Belmont Stakes also may pass up the Detroit Derby tut there are a sufficient number of good colts in the probable field to make the pros ¬ pects very interesting interestingLack Lack of engagements has kept Mrs Silas B Masons Sun Portland inactive since his victory over Roman Soldier in the Illinois Derby but he is an eligible for the Detroit Derby and one of its leading candidates He had his final preparation for the race on Monday when he easily defeated three other Continued on twentyninth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page horses including Blackbirder and then worked out the full Derby distance The son of Sun Briar and Portland Urn improved steadily since J Thomas Taylor purchased him from Willis Sharpe Kilmer for Mrs Masons account until his triumph in the Illinois Derby His task in the Detroit Derby will be much tougher especially with a shift in the weights against him but it is reasonable to suppose that he also has im ¬ proved some since beating Roman Soldier SoldierCold Cold Shoulder Alfred Gwynne Vander bilts improving Display colt which showed a sensational trial for the Belmont Stakes and then had the supporters of Omaha and the other Belmont starters very uneasy as he maintained a long lead for more than a mile in the race is going to Detroit with his owner hoping he will do very much bet ¬ ter than Discovery did a year ago The Detroit Derby was one of Discoverys few bad races last season Cold Shoulder must be regarded as dangerous in calculations of the event just off of his performance in the Belmont He was under steady restraint while setting the pace in last Saturdays special and he clug to the lead for a dis ¬ tance greater than the Detroit Derby route Furthermore he will not have up 126 pounds Saturday as he did against Omaha Fire thorn and Rosemont RosemontThe The muchused Roman Soldier which probably will be under new management in the race has been on the scene for several days and is reported to have trained well He took it very easy following his narrow defeat by Sun Portland in the Illinois Der ¬ by and the rest even though it was slight must have helped him but whether it was sufficient to have him in top form remains to be seen Unless Firethorn competes in the event it promises to be a threecornered battle between Roman Soldier Cold Shoul ¬ der and Sun Portland with the latter prob ¬ ably ruling a slight favorite Firethorn will be the choice if he accepts the issue al ¬ though it will be surprising if Preston Burch takes the Walter Jeffords colt back five sixteenths of a mile so soon in a weeks time King Saxon found the mile and a quarter distance of the Suburban Handicap beyond his powers but he continues to rule supreme at one mile as he proved in his clever vic ¬ tory in the Metropolitan Handicap Given ample time by his owner and trainer C H Knebelkamp to get over his preparation and participation in the Suburban the four yearold son of Saxon and Poltova by George Smith came back in the Queens County Handicap inaugural feature at Aqueduct Monday to turn back Only One Singing Wood Thursday Discovery and Co equel leading all the way to run the mile in 137 He had up 118 pounds and han ¬ dled the impost in a manner to suggest that he could have carried a little more Knebel ¬ kamp a very sagacious person in matters pertaining to the horse undoubtedly will think twice before he sends King Saxon as far as a mile and onequarter again but the Kentuckian will not duck many oppor ¬ tunities in New York and vicinity up to nine furlongs furlongsVanderbilt Vanderbilt and his trainer John H Stot ler must be cnrious to know why Discovery ran so poorly after he had shown such a good effort back of Head Play in the Subur ¬ ban and had trained so impressively for this engagement About the most plausible explanation is that he is a member of the Fair Play tribe and runs well only when the spirit moves him Like Cavalcade Dis ¬ covery has done nothing expected of him this season although he has looked all over a champion several times in the morning However we are confident he will find him ¬ self one of these days and once again will show the stuff that made him a high rank ¬ ing threeyearold last season His next engagement is in the Brooklyn Handicap following which he will run in the Detroit Challenge Cup CupWith With two of its five weeks out of the way Washington Park has hit its stride much to the gratification of its new owners who undoubtedly felt very uneasy as poor weather continued almost without interrup ¬ tion during that period Even though the third week of the meeting opened under disagreeable conditions the attendance and wagering Monday was remarkably good and with sunshine in order yesterday the patron ¬ age was such as to make the new owners feel they were justified in going to so much expense in making over the plant and in elevating the purses to a 1000 minimum and the stakes to at least 5000 Washing ¬ ton Park hasnt the same number of good horses it had four or five years ago because of the competition offered by Detroit and New England but it has sufficient to pro ¬ vide Chicago racing rans with high class sport and that is just what is being served whenever the track is fast and the sun is shining The totalizator handle during the first two weeks averaged well over 200000 a tremendous jump over last years figures and the best days save Memorial Day are ahead
