CARISBROOKE DISPLAYS SPEED Gallops Five and a Half Furlongs at Rockingham in 105 Cutic Face Defeats Balios In HighPriced Claiming Race Perfect Weather f ffor for Sport SALEM N IL June 13 A filly from the Pacific Coast triumphed in the main attracr tion at Rockingham Park this afternoon when Carisbrooke under the colors of Mrs P M Pike raced to an easy victory in the handicap which attracted a field of better class than any of the remaining seven races At the final post the fouryearold daughter of Carlaris Tommywaac was two lengths in advance of the much improved Accolade with The Darb slightly more than two lengths away nosing Character out of third money The lass from California hung out the best figures of the meeting for the distance traveling over the route in l05v l05vIt It was her first score since she left her home state this spring and was not unantici ¬ pated by her connections as she showdd only 12 to 5 in the tote Perfect weather prevailed for th6 sport which while interest ing was marked by two notable upsets wheh tiie well backed Zowie and Judge Schilling went down to defeat defeatCarisbrooke Carisbrooke had speed in abundance to ¬ day but she had to travel the first half mile in 46 before she could shake off several early rivals Johnson drove her bay head to the front in the first furlong but Char ¬ acter went right with her while Red Badge Wise Anne and Sweet Mollie were lapped on the two pacemakers pacemakersThey They sped along in this fashion to the middle of the turn and then the two leaders drew away slightly It was not until the stretch was reached that the Carlaris filly managed to dispose of Character and then she moved on to win with speed in reserve reserveAccolade Accolade left the post slowly and was out ¬ paced during the run down the far side of the track He moved into contention swiftly on the turn and easily ran past all but the leader in the stretch The Darb began slowly and trailed the others to the far turn He moved through the bunch slowly on the turn being able to find clear pass ¬ age finally coming to the outside and clos ¬ ing with good courage courageCharacter Character had plenty of early speed but was much used in the pace and quit in the final sixteenth Sweet Mollie showed early speed as did Wise Anne and Red Badge The trio quit badly however howeverThe The mile and a sixteenth high priced claiming race which followed the principal event was considered strictly a twohorse affair with Thomasville and Balios the lead irig qqntestants The running proved other ¬ wise as the Chilhowee mare Cutie Face had the speed to race the last named plater into the ground and then hung on long enough to withstand the belated rush 6t the other horse r Wall took Cutie Face out with Balios at the start and the pair sprinted away from their rivals gaining steadily on the others during the back stretch run and coming to the home turn head and head They were far in advance of the other three contestants at that point At the top of the stretch the mare shook off her male rival and drew away slightly In the final fur ¬ long she had to be driven out to gain the award by threequarters of a length Thomasville probably would have been the winner undera stronger ride than John ¬ son was able to put forth The Supremus gelding dropped far out of it and at the threeeighths post looked a 100 to 1 chance Kot until the stretch Avas reached could his diminutive pilot rouse him and then he finr ished with a rush Balios had his speed and simply qtlit while Lonmeg and Cohort Miss never were factors factorsZowie Zowie an oddson choice in the five fur ¬ longs juvenile race which was the days secondary attraction ran much below her previous successful effort over the local course when she smothered her field for speed moving away into a long lead She con ¬ tinued in hand to the end and reached the finish unextended with daylight over Pan bula Panbula was in the first flight throughout falling heir to the place when Jubal tired from his chase of the winner Appomattox gained third after saving all possible ground in the closing fivesix ¬ teenths Judge Schilling after wmmng twice and finishing second on the occasion of his two other outings over the local course handed the favorite players a setback The tenyear old son of Hand Grenade backed into an almost even money choice failed to garner any part of the purse in the third another dash at five and a half furlongs The re ¬ sult vas an upset when On Our Way proved a frontrunning victor only a neck separat ¬ ing hi mfrom Step Away at the finish The North Star HI filly held to second place virtually throughout and at the finish was overtaking the successful one rapidly rapidlyApprentice Apprentice Jessa Johnson chalked up a
