CHIEF CHEROKEE SCORES Finally Earns Purse for Owner Ko morous at Washington Park Outclasses Opponents in Chester ¬ field Purse Pplyphote and Homer L Winners HOMEWOOD 111 June 13 Chief Chero Jcee which had been threatening to win ever since L E Komorous Chicago turf patron purchased him out of the A B Gallaher estates sale of horses in training at Churchill Downs a month ago finally made good when he raced to a sweeping score over five other threeyearolds in the Chesterfield Purse at Washington Park to ¬ day The race sixth and best on a program consisting of the usual eight was decided over seven furlongs and the victory of the Cherokee Ponge gelding completed a double for the Komorous stable which is trained by B S Michell MichellThe The victor was burdened with top weight Of 118 pounds but so excelled his opponents that there was little to the race Alertly handled by young Jimmy King the Komo ¬ rous gelding began in stride and after rac ¬ ing clear in the first threesixteenths was steadied along to the stretch For four fur ¬ longs Pundit and Silver Sickle which took down third and second honors as named ran along on almost equal terms in nearest pursuit of the victor but as Chief Cherokee came away in the stretch Pundits speed slackened and Silver Sickle came on to take second five lengths away from the winner and three before Pundit PunditCOUNT COUNT TETRARCH FOURTH FOURTHCount Count Tetrarch second choice to the win ¬ ner ran home a laboring fourth three lengths in Pundits wake and with only his head showing before Surcouf South Gal ¬ lant rounded out the field the smallest of the day Favored by fast footing the winner ran the distance in the excellent time of 124 His winning performance was witnessed by another large and enthusiastic crowd crowdJudge Judge Bonelli gelded son of Prince Pal which had exhibited nothing in two previous starts during the meeting carried the Aarons Weil colors to victory in the five furlong contest of maiden juveniles that ushered in the sport Although he was shuf fled back in the early racing and several times blocked in attempts to race through next to the rail in the stretch the victor was good enough to overcome the several adverse breaks eventually winning out by half a length over I See The latter under rolors for the first time made virtually all Ihe pace and outstayed Wayaloft by a good length for second The first and second choices Court and Spirituelle were nearest the three leaders at the finish a small meas ¬ ure of unfavorable luck giving Court a flimsy excuse while Spirituelle went down without mishap mishapACCIDENT ACCIDENT IN SECOND SECONDA A great amount of crowding soon after the start of the race and in which several contestants almost fell marred the second race also for maiden twoyearolds under claiming conditions and won by Rustic Las ¬ sie She escaped the early jamming and shoving for which Impatient which started from the outside position appeared almost entirely to blame blameThe The winner skirted the field and after racing to the front in the stretch came away to win by four lengths Firm Hand accounted for second honors with Jerry H third and One Knot fourth Liquidation and Whipowill were virtually eliminated by interference interferencePolyphote Polyphote another faithful performer in the stable of C E Davison Illinois turf ¬ man whose Printemps furnished the big thrill of Wednesdays racing when she won at record mutuel odds in this state was re ¬ turned a winning favorite over Sock Dol oger Lo Orlatta and only three others in the third at lead the field into the stretch L E Komorqus Broad Moadows took the threerquarters fifth race with a strong challenge down the middle o the final straightaway Strongly favored in the betting the victory of the locallyowned eightyearold was one of the most popular of the afternoon He raced the distance in 112 winning by two lengths over Gama ¬ liel which in turn defeated Hueu by a short head The latter practically left at the start trailed the field to the stretch then improved his place with bulletlike speed and with better luck at the post might have been the winner Both Ep and Epernay which led the way in the early stages weakened badly after four furlongs
