REAPING REWARDREADY Mars Derby Hope in Spectacular Move at Churchill Downs Works One Mile Over Slow Track in 140 War Admiral Breezes Breezesan an Easy Three Quarters LOUISVILLE Ky April 30 Reaping Re ¬ ward chief Kentucky Derby hope of Mrs Ethel V Mars of Chicago which has ruled one of the choices for the 50000 race here on May 8 since early last fall continues to train in impressive fashion and this morn ¬ ing over a slow track at Churchill Downs turned in a spectacular move under the direc ¬ tion McGarveyThe of his trainer Robert McGarvey The brown son of Sickle the second high ¬ est money winning twoyearold of 1936 and winner here last fall of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes has performed every task asked of him since his return to training this spring and when he worked a mile in 140 this morning over a course that was far from its best he further indicated that barring the unforseen he will come up to the Derby as fit as human hands can make him Con ¬ tinuing on after his eight furlongs trial Reaping Reward galloped out the one mile and a furlong in 155 and as some observers put it he looked as if he might have run all day dayReaping Reaping Rewards effort featured a train ¬ ing period which saw practically every Derby candidate of consequence here in action Although the Milky Way Farm star fur ¬ nished the outstanding workout of the morn ¬ ing much attention focused on Samuel D Riddles War Admiral cofavorite for the Derby with Pompoon which was breezed for the first time since his arrival Wednesday from Maryland where he captured the Chesa ¬ peake The Riddle colt the only son of Man o War nominated for the Kentucky race was not permitted to extend himself at any stage as he went the threequarters in 12075 12075OTHER OTHER DERBY WORKS WORKSThe The other Derby horses to work during this mornings session were Military and Case Ace Reaping Rewards stablemates Fairy Hill Bernard F Grey Gold Gerald Teddy Green and Carl S Included among those which were confined to lighter exer ¬ cises such as gallops around the track were Sceneshifter and Sunset Trail IL while No Sirs work was restricted to his stable en Continued on thirtyfourth page REAftNGREWARDREADY Continued from first page closure and Dellor was to be under saddle this afternoon Grey Gold which is to carry the colors of E W Duffy of Detroit and which distinguished himself by turning back aband of Derby eligihles recently at Keene land was theTonly horse to go the full Derby route of a mile and a quarter this morning He accomplished the task in 213 while Bernard F the hope of I J Collins went a handy mile and an eighth in 159 Mili ¬ tary Gerald Teddy Green and Carl S traversed a mile each the Milky Way rep ¬ resentative covering the distance in 146 just breezing Teddy Green owned by Henry H Cross was timed in 147 handily arid Carl S the eligible of James Chesney was clocked in 1 48 also handily Mrs W H Fursts Gerald was timed in 148 and the move was somewhat disappointing in view of his previous works which had been much more impressive impressiveCase Case Ace breezed five furlongs in 103 while in the remaining spin Fairy Hill Wil ¬ liam DuPont Jrs Santa Anita Derby winner breezed a half in 52 52NATIONS NATIONS TASTE PACEMAKER PACEMAKERIn In his sparkling work Reaping Reward was paced for the first fiveeighths by Na ¬ tions Taste and in the final half mile was accompanied by Dogaway Not to take from the trial of the Chicagoowned hopeful he had the benefit of the best part of the racing strip for the first threequarters and nego ¬ tiated only one turn in addition to the ad ¬ vantage of pacemakers Following a short gallop trainer McGarvey took Reaping Re ¬ ward and Nations Taste into the mile chute and to the starting gate as Dogaway went to his starting position nearing the three furlongs marker Leaving the stalls in fine fashion and quick to settle into good stride Reaping Reward reeled off the opening quar ¬ ter in 23 On the main track from that juncture he travelled the second quarter in 24 to complete a half mile in 47 and the threequarters in 113 AVOIDS HEAVY STREP Through the long Downs home stretch the fourth quarter of his fast gallop Reap ¬ ing Reward held to a brisk pace though the clockers had him in 27 for the two fur ¬ longs Just prior to reaching the stretch A Robertson who directed him over a wide course from the beginning swung him almost to the middle of the track thus avoid ¬ ing the heavy strip along the inside rail Considering that no strong pressure was ap ¬ plied and the ground lost the slower time for the closing quarter did not detract from the workout workoutAlthough Although no conclusions could be drawn from his easy trial War Admiral looked fit and showed that he suffered no ill effects from his westward jaunt Naturally all horsemen who happened to be on the track at the time watched the Riddle colt very closely A number of them looked for him to make plenty of trouble here a week from tomorrow War Admiral inaugurated his light yet beneficial breeze at the three quarters post going the quarter in 25 and four furlongs in 52 Trainer George Con way was one of the first to reach the track and as rain threatened had his star per ¬ former under saddle shortly after daybreak daybreakMILITARY MILITARY UNDER RESTRAINT RESTRAINTMilitary Military out even earlier than War Ad ¬ miral and his work companion Mars Shield the stables Texas Derby winner also went into action at the threequarters pole For a half mile during which they were on even terms the time was 51 but in the next or third quarter the Derby colt was kept under such stout restraint that the Milky Way filly drew slightly in advance completing the six furlongs in 115 to Mil ¬ itarys 116 Mars Shield which was hav ¬ ing her final preparation for a possible en ¬ gagement in the Clark Handicap tomorrow was pulled up and Military continued on seveneighths in 131 and the mile in 146 Military looked very good as did the Mars filly fillySomewhat Somewhat extended in his move over the tenfurlong route which saw him having Belleek as a companion the last three fur ¬ longs Grey Gold hardly showed anything sufficient to win him new admirers Start ¬ ing at the furlong post the Duffy Derby horse clicked off the first quarter in 24 the half in 49 threequarters in 117 the mile in 144 and nine furlongs in 159 The time of 213 for the full distance re ¬ vealed a closing furlong in 14 not bad under prevailing conditions conditionsAs As long as the mare Wild Turkey re ¬ mained with him which was for three quarters Gerald displayed a willingness to run freely but once he was alone Jack Westrope astride the Furst horse could not get much out of the threeyearold The fractions were 25 for the first quarter 50 for a half mile and 117 for three quarters
