Hera and There on the Turf War Admiral Ban Like His Sire SireSubdued Subdued Foes in Fourth Quar ¬ ter terPompoon Pompoon Easily Best of Others Derby Crowd Handled Smoothly War Admiral unquestionably was the best Ihorse in the Kentucky Derby field and just as easily was Pompoon the second best The small but sturdy son of Man o War and Brushup by Sweep took the sixtythird running of the countrys greatest sporting event in a fashion that caused numerous horsemen to remark that he had every right to follow in the footsteps of Omaha Cavalcade Twenty Grand and Reigh Count other Kentucky Derby winners which went on to the threeyearold championship The Glen Riddle Farm colt has the opportunity Saturday of gaining another leg on the title in the Preakness an event in which he will meet several of those he vanquished in the Derby as well as others which remained in the East notably Matey Flying Scot and Mosawtre About the principal reason War Admiral might have for sidestepping the Pimlico feature would be the desire of his owner to save him for the Belmont Stakes assuming of course that he came out of the Derby in good condition conditionThe The manner in which War Admiral won the Derby was like that his sire employed when he was the monarch of the track Man o War had the speed to jump to the front and to stay there and that is just what War Admiral did He turned in an opening quarter in 23 despite only a twentyfive foot run at the pole to set the pace past the stands Charles Kurtsinger took him in hand about a sixteenth out as he had to ride him briskly away from the post not only to escape the crowding that might have happened if he had been slower but to take the lead away from Heelfly as the Texas horse was all but in motion at the start and he might have been that Going to the first turn War Admiral was showing the way under restraint but of the four horses nearest him including Heelfly Fairy Hill Billionaire and Sir Damion none was under a choking pull They were just for ¬ tunate in being able to keep up Harry upHarry Richards had Pompoon exception ¬ ally well placed from the start and around the turn Jerome Louchheims star was about live lengths back of War Admiral going easier under restraint than the other early contenders which were beginning to feel ill at ease from the Man o War colts first half mile in 46 Down the back stretch War Admiral gave Billionaire his licking rhile Fairy Hill had his troubles in keeping up slipping back to third place as Heelfly began his bid to overtake the leader War Admiral required 25 to run this quarter completing the six furlongs in 112 but it was sufficient to keep him in command As the field left the back stretch Richards eased Pompoon to the outside for his assault oq the pacemaker and at the time the son of Pompey was going smoothly enough to be regarded as War Admirals chief and only menace By running the quarter mile around the turn in 25 to reach the mile in 137 War Admiral held Pompoon safe but Kurtsinger Continued on thirtieth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page took no chances and gave his mount a severe shaking up just after the stretch was reached Pompoon which had turned wide into the stretch apparently from Richards lefthanded whipping was nose and tail with War Admiral hence Kurtsingers scare but under the pressure the son of Man o War bounded away and to all intent and purpose the race was over His time for the final quarter was 25 which proved that his fast pace through the first half mile had not distressed him although it may have been fortunate that he was held to 25 for the run down the back stretch which would have been his slowest quarter of the race if War Admiral had been ridden out How ¬ ever Kurtsinger knew he had the race won entering the final sixteenth and he began easing up his mount with fifty yards to go Pompoon was asked for everything he had continuing to go wide under the whipping but he just wasnt good enough to run down War Admiral although he drew away from the others or rather they dropped back from him Consequently he was eight lengths in front of Reaping Reward at the finish The Milky Way Farm colt appeared to be going nicely down the back stretch but he dropped back on the turn only to move up in credit ¬ able fashion in the early part of the stretch and tire toward the end If those immedi ¬ ately behind him hadnt been tiring also he most certainly would have lost third honors Sceneshifter was about the only member of the field which made up an appreciable amount of ground through the final quarter and he had been unduly restrained to keep out of trouble That has become a habit with him as he encountered the same sort of dif ¬ ficulties in the Flamingo Stakes Aside from the race itself it was a great Derby The crowd was the largest yet wellbehaved un ¬ der fine handling It was one Derby Colonel i Winn was able to enjoy thgroughiJTi 3
