I SWEET DESIRE TAKES OAKS Bomar Miss Length and a Half Be ¬ fore Lucky Pledge in Stakes Large Crowd Attracted to Pimlico Cours Dundrillin Popular Winner of the Steeplechase Event BALTIMORE Md May 10 Sweet Desire from the Bomar Stable of Charles Bohn and P A Markey Detroit sportsmen won the first running of the Pimlico Oaks since it was temporarily abandoned after Dark Mag ¬ nets victory in 1931 at the Maryland Jockey Club course this afternoon Featuring the opening of Preakness week the mile and one furlong event for threeyearold fillies attracted a fairsized crowd as clear weather prevailed prevailedThe The chestnut daughter of Jean Valjean and Sweet Genevieve capably ridden by Willie Saunders earned 2325 of the 3500 added purse Covering the distance in 154 under an impost of 109 pounds Sweet De ¬ sire defeated Belair Studs Lucky Pledge a sister to Gallant Fox by a length and a half Mrs R A Van Cliefs Morning was three and a half lengths farther back in third place and well before Enamor and Graceful Flight the only other starters startersMorning Morning and Graceful Flight the latter representing Ral Parr were coupled in the wagering and the entry was a slight favor ¬ ite over Lucky Pledge and the winner winnerUNDER UNDER STRONG RESTRAINT RESTRAINTAs As Morning and Lucky Pledge bid for the early lead Saunders took Sweet Desire under strong restraint and did not permit her to move forward until the field was half way down the back stretch Advancing steadily when given her head the Jean Valjean filly was close to the leaders approaching the stretch turn Continuing to gain fast she joined Lucky Pledge and Morning as the field entered the stretch and bearing over the Bomar miss caused the Belair lassie to be caught in the wedge After opening up a clear lead she was only mildly ridden to maintain her advantage to the end as Lucky Pledge overcame her interference to finish well while Morning weakened Enamor and Graceful Flight were unable to make trouble troubleBenefitting Benefitting from a fast getaway in a poor start which saw him swerving over on Abaddon and Bomar Catomar accounted for the Tecumseh Purse the secondary fea ¬ ture in the silks of J P Jones Ridden by Bobby Merritt the daughter of Omar Khay ¬ yam and Caterpillar scored by two and a half lengths over Abaddon representing Mrs Emil Denemark and the favorite as Mrs L H Veitchs Unheralded was a head farther away and a similar margin before Sun Scout Seven fair threeyearold platers composed the field for the mile and one sixteenth event eventOPENER OPENER TO DORIS RENE RENEThe The opening event which brought out seven cheap Marylandbred twoyearolds went to Doris Rene owned by Heimie Neu steter and ridden by Joe Wagner in the time of 55 for the four and onehalf fur ¬ longs Wearing down Prince Mowlee in the stretch the brown daughter of Philippi and French Doll scored by threefourths of a length over La Loutre which came strongly to beat out Prince Mowlee by a head headDundrillin Dundrillin owned by Duncan A Read and the favorite scored a lucky victory in the steeplechase in which he defeated Syriac owned by M H Beams Jr by threefourths of a length with H R Bains Greatorex just a nose away Wilfrid G was the only other one among the seven starters to finish the twomile event the time for which was 352 352I Flying Feathers set a good pace for a turn and a half of the field and then made two bad landings which caused Briar Blue and Greatorex to move up to him Briar Blue was fighting with Flying Feathers for the lead coming into the stretch when the lat ¬ ter raced off the course and in following him out the J Fred Adams Jrs jumper crashed into the rail of the last fence cata ¬ pulting hedgeThis R Lucas into the hedge This accident enabled Greatorex to take the lead but he soon gave way to Dundril ¬ lin which had come up steadily under the urging of J McGovern Syriac which had been well out of it closed with a tremen ¬ dous rush to nose out Greatorex for the place while gaining rapidly on the winner
