REEON FURNISHES SURPRISE Wins to Provide Biggest Upset of Current Narragansett Meeting Favorites Do Well Until Victory of Coward Coffey Filly Ladfield Disap ¬ points Backers PAWTUCKET R L May 10 After choices had triumphed in three of the first four offerings Reelon from the stable of Coward Coffey provided the biggest upset of the meeting The Eternal filly surprised by scoring by a length in the principal of ¬ fering of the day a sprint of six furlongs that engaged nine of the better grade platers Buster Boy from the string of Miss L C White staged a rush through the stretch to race into second place a length in back of the successful filly and just a head before J J Shugrues Infinata Ladfield the fa ¬ vorite was fourth fourthApprentice Apprentice L Dubois was slated to ride Reelon but R Eccard was substituted when Dubois was unable to do any better tin 105 12 pounds Trainer R A Coward was loath to have the filly carry any overweight and that he used good judgment was shown when the miss responded gamely in the drive to hold off the belated bid of Bus ¬ ter Boy BoyMy My Colin was the one which set the pace during the greater part of the race In ¬ finata chased closest after the leader then followed the ultimate winner My Colin was clear coming into the stretch but it was not until a furlong from the finish that the Colin gelding gave way Reelon quickly assumed command and with Eccard placing the miss under vigorous handling managed to have an advantage of a length as the finish line was reached reachedLadfield Ladfield after failing to keep up in the early part of the trip was taken to the out ¬ side after turning from the far side of the track flashed a burst of speed but it was only a flash and he was unable to make up any ground in the drive to the finish al ¬ though he was within easy striking distance of the leader as he made the turn for home homeFASTRUN FASTRUN RACE RACEIt It was the first victory of the year for Reelon and in chalking up her score she sped over the threequarters in 111 111Although Although cloudy and chilly weather pre ¬ vailed at the opening of the program the sun broke through as the day wore on and a slight rise in temperature was noted notedA A good Monday crowd was on hand for the sport and as the bestbacked choices were successful in the early races the mu tuel handle was brisk briskHarp Harp O Gold holding on in more deter ¬ mined fashion than marked her previous start at the meeting had little trouble in accounting for the opener for sprinting platers Nigrette after establishing the pace until well into the stretch lasted to take second place and Square was third a head in advance of Twosome TwosomeThe The Polydor miss was full of run as Bier man steadied her along in nearest chase of the pacemaker Into the stretch it was still Nigrette but a touch of the whip was all that was needed for Harp OGold to readily take the lead and increase her mar ¬ gin rapidly in the final sixteenth sixteenthDEE DEE HARD MAKES GOOD GOODAfter After displaying two indifferent efforts at the track Miss Anita Doris Die Hard was dropped into a spot today in which he was able to defeat eleven platers over the six furlongs distance Charley Stevenson had the mount on the sevenyearbid which was slow leaving the gate and was rated some distance back for the first half mile Round ¬ ing the final turn the early leaders began to shorten stride and Stevenson went to work on Die Hard and under a vigorous drive had him well up in the contention midway of the stretch Continuing gamely under a whipping finish the gelding got up to defeat the two outsiders St Mpritz and Gayette a half length The latter was one of the extreme outsiders in the wager ¬ ing and lost the place by a nose in a camera finish
