BILLY BARTON STEEPLECHASE Attracts Large WeekDay Crowd to Popular Old Pimlico Argonaut Trained and Bidden by M H HDixon Dixon Returned the Winner After AfterSparkling Sparkling Performance BALTIMORE Md May 13 Argonaut owned by W J Strawbridge and trained and ridden by Morris H Dixon accounted for the tenth running of the Billy Barton Stee ¬ plechase which in featuring this afternoons program attracted a large weekday crowd including many hunts devotees to Pimlico Closing with a rush after passing the final fence the gray gelding by Tetratema Golden Corn won easily by two and a half lengths over James Cox Bradys Crooning Water while Campbell Weirs Soldiers Fate the oddson favorite was another length back in third place placeCloudy Cloudy and warm weather prevailed for the afternoons sport with a shower falling just before the third race but it did no more than settle the dust on the track trackA A purse of 1000 was given in the Billy Barton with a trophy being awarded the winning rider All the starters were handled by amateurs Billy Barton which finished second in the Grand National Steeplechase in England in 1928 and for which the race was named was used as the pony in leading the field to the post postFALTERS FALTERS AT LAST JUMP JUMPSoldiers Soldiers Fate took the lead from Quick Verdict after a third of the threemile jour ¬ ney and he set a steady pace thereafter while jumping badly several times until reaching the final hedge There he was passed by Argonaut on the inside and Croon ¬ ing Water on the outside the gray horse jumped away under the urging of his rider Crooning Water then outgamed Soldiers Fate for second place placeQuick Quick Verdict finished well back in fourth place while Briar Blue was a dis ¬ tant fifth Dark Forest which completed the field was pulled up after he had dropped well out of the competition The time was 607 nearly six seconds slower than Faskadales track record and the winner carried 157 pounds poundsEleven Eleven threeyearold maidens bred in Maryland composed the field in the opening dash at six furlongs with the winner turn ¬ ing up in Bareback a gelded son of Bud Lerner and Circus Rider owned by the Lib ¬ erty Lane Stable and ridden by Leo Fallon Taking the lead soon after the start Bare ¬ back led all the way by a comfortable mar ¬ gin being two lengths ahead of Indiana at the finish as White Hot was another length and a half back in third place and a nose before Mahogany MahoganyHABDEABNED HABDEABNED TBIUMPH TBIUMPHJoe Joe Wagner increased his lead in the jockeys race by driving E K Brysons Mis ¬ ter Gander the favorite to a hardearned triumph over Count Tetrarch Skyride and three other platers in the second race at a mile and seventy yards The fiveyearold gelding by Chicle Flying Witch rushed up on the outside in the back stretch to take command after heading off the threat of Skyride entering the stretch He bore out as Count Tetrarch in a late bid attempted to come up on the inside but the latter was not impeded Dona Dulcin showed an even effort to be fourth fourthMasked Masked Gal owned by B F Christmas and ridden by R Morris defeated six other platers over the six furlongs course in the third event Well up from the start the fouryearold daughter of Galetian and Masking went to the front on the outside entering the stretch and drew away under hard riding to score by two and a half lengths over Sage Girl the favorite which closed with a belated rush after having been under mild urging on the turn Resurrec ¬ tion came from well back to beat out True Tune paceOne which forced the early pace One of the closest finishes of the meeting occurred in the fifth race the Culpepper Purse which brought out five medium grade threeyearold platers when Miss Marlboro and Jelly Roll reached the wire almost on even terms the photograph being called upon to make the decision The E K Bryson filly second choice to Uncle Lester in the wagering was declared the winner over Mrs A J Abels colorbearer Uncle Lester representing the Liberty Lane Stable was six lengths away in third place with Toni anna fourth and Nevernever last
