Leader This Year j BALTIMORE Md May 15 War Admiral is supreme among the threeyearolds An easy winner of the Kentucky Derby the Man o War colt stood a gruelling stretch challenge from Pompoon to capture a bril ¬ liant renewal of the Preakness Stakes before a crowd of 40000 persons who jammed old Pimlico this afternoon At the end of a spectacular mile and threesixteenths race for a prize of 45600 the mighty little racer bearing the black and yellow silks of Samuel D Riddle was a head in front of Jerome Louchheims gallant colt Eight lengths back in third place was Flying Scot tha colorbearer of John Hay Whitney WhitneyIn In running the course in 158 just two fifths slower than the track record held jointly by Gallant Knight and Dark Hope the son of Man o War and Brushup by Sweep became the sixth horse to complete a Kentucky DerbyPreakness double and the second to duplicate the victory of his sire He has won 106600 this year and is the leading money winner of the season seasonBRILLIANT BRILLIANT ASSEMBLAGE ASSEMBLAGEA A brilliant assemblage viewed the Preak ¬ ness The skies cleared before noon and the sun shone all during the afternoon while the track dried out in miraculous fashion under constant attention and for the Preak ¬ ness running it showed only streaks of mud which the horses carefully avoided avoidedThe The Preakness was a repetition of the Derby in that War Admiral was victorious and Pompoon second but the Pqmpey colt gave the Riddle colt a much sterner battle being on even terms with him entering the final sixteenth where the son of Man o War drew on his vast store of courage to draw away by inches approaching the finish under strong hand riding from Charles Kurtsinger Pompoon finished eight lengths ahead of Reaping Reward in the Derby and he was that far in front of Flying Scot at the wind up of the Preakness PreaknessAs As at Churchill Downs last Saturday War Admiral was fractious at the post and he was second among the eight starters to leave the starting gate but Kurtsinger soon had him in front where he remained for the en ¬ tire distance although he was closely pressed for the pacemaking job in the open ¬ ing quarter but a strategical move on the lower turn sent him into clear command commandKURTSINGERS KURTSINGERS SKILL SKILLIn In the run down the front stretch War Admiral was flanked by Jewell Dorsett and Mosawtre the lastnamed being under strong restraint Kurtsinger sent his mount straight into the turn well out from the rail and then abruptly guided him to the inside with the result that he gained an advantage of a length in only a few moments Flying momentsFlying Scot which had cut the corner was at War Admirals heels turning into the back stretch with Jewell Dorsett and Mo Continued on thirtieth page WAR ADMIRAL ADDS ADDSPREAKNESS PREAKNESS TO TRIUMPHS Continued from first page sawtre flanked on him Pompoon which was bothered at the start by Mosawtre and had to be eased back on the clubhouse turn was close up in fifth place and well before Over The Top and Matey while Merry Maker brought up the rear rearKurtsinger Kurtsinger steadied the mighty little brown colt along smoothly in the run down the back stretch but Pompoon had a chance to advance between horses and he flashed up to be at the heels of the leader passing the half mile ground This was the signal for the Louisville riding veteran to call on War Admiral AdmiralThe The Riddle colt increased his advantage slightly Flying Scot was still in third place with Jewell Dorsetf fourth and Mosawtre fifth Matey and Over The Top were just beginning their moves movesPOMPOON POMPOON SAVES GROUND GROUNDWar War Admiral continued to race in the best part of theTrack on the second turn but Wayne Wright went to the rail with Pompoon to save sufficient ground for the Louchheim colt to reach the leaders throat latch as the two straightened out for the run homev Under Wrights left hand whip ¬ ping Pompoon came out as he entered the final straightaway to bump War Admiral ever so slightly slightlyKurtsinger Kurtsinger did not become flustered at this new challenge and he wjerit at his mount with his hands and heels while still saving something of War Admirals stamina At the sixteenth post Pompoon was even with the favorite and then Kurtsinger went after the Riddle star with all the strength in his hands War Admiral was ready with his response arid under the increased pres ¬ sure edged away from Pompoon ever so slightly but ever so surely as well wellThere There was no question of his victory as the two flashed past the judges but the officials took no chances and called for the picture When War Admirals number was shown a mighty roar was sent up by the great crowd as he was the shortest price horse ever to win the Preakness his pay ¬ off reading 270 230 and 240 240FLYING FLYING SCOT THIRD THIRDAll All attention was given the sensational stretch duel of the two leaders but back in the field Flying Scot while tiring was able to increase his advantage over the others until he was two lengths before Mosawtre Jewell Dorsett having dropped back to last place in the final half mile Over the Top was at Mosawtres heels and two lengths before Matey which possessed a similar advantage over Merry Maker while the lone filly in the field was a distant trailer trailerThe The Preakness has been run in faster time only once High Quest having accom ¬ plished the feat on a fast track three years ago by onefifth of a second War Admiral showed good speed in the early stages as he did in the Derby running the first quarter in 23 the half mile in 47 and threequar ¬ ters in 112 he went around the second turn in 25 to reach the mile in 137 requiring 20 to run the final threesix ¬ teenths teenthsFOLLOWS FOLLOWS see War Admiral perform for the first time this season as he has been confined by illness He received the Wood ¬ land vase from Charles E McLane presi ¬ dent of the Maryland Jockey Club in the unsaddling enclosure in front of the stand where War Admiral was decorated with a floral blanket blanketKurtsinger Kurtsinger also enjoyed his second Preak ¬ ness victory as he was astride Head Play
